RAMACH
Tantrum
xxxxRamach sometimes had issues differentiating between good or bad days, for good days could turn sour so quickly. Lately, the amount of good-turned-bad days had trained Ramach to never assume that a day had been good until she was in her bed falling asleep when everything was over.
xxxxRamach thought the day would be another bad one when it first began, because Karthus had been difficult as usual, refusing to eat obediently when she’d tried to feed her. She’d batted away the spoon Ramach offered to her, sending food flying across the room, and ran out of the kitchen. Ramach had been left to clean up the mess and bring the remainder of breakfast up to Karthus’s room, the exhaustion already weighing on her body even though the day had barely begun. From that rocky start, she had immediately assumed the worst.
xxxx— Maybe a walk outside would make her ease up, — Aleph had suggested, when he observed the dark circles under her eyes.
xxxxHe was as benign and gracious as he’d always been, but for some reason Ramach didn’t feel comforted. She could only begin imagining the thousand different ways a stroll through the gardens could end in disaster: what if Karthus refused and threw a tantrum? What if Karthus got lost in the maze of flora? What if Karthus took this opportunity to just… run away completely?
xxxxRamach had settled down wearily nearby, scrubbing at her tired face. “I don’t know what else to do,” she admitted.
xxxx— I know,— Aleph murmured.
xxxxHe laid a soothing wing across her back. The familiar timbre of his voice held a cadence to it, one that instinctually made Ramach’s uneasiness melt away. She sighed and leaned into him wordlessly.
xxxx—I think it would do you good too,— her mate continued.
xxxxAnd so Ramach had conceded. She fetched Karthus and asked her to come on a stroll, to which their foster daughter simply stood up and went, her face gloomy as if she knew she wouldn’t be left alone unless she complied. Throwing Aleph a final look of ‘wish me good luck’, Ramach had left their den with Karthus, already anticipating things to start going very wrong.
xxxxThey didn’t. They went better and better as she talked mindlessly about the magic of the elements and the surge of natural energies created by the world around them, about her experiences casting her first spell, her first hex, her first charm. She described, in vivid detail, the very first time she’d managed to transform a fish into a rabbit. And as though entranced, Karthus listened with an attentiveness Ramach didn’t know she’d possessed, her eyes wide and full of wonder. And when Ramach reached the end of her story, Karthus smiled at her for the first time.
xxxxWhen the sun was setting, Ramach finally brought them home, carrying a sprig of the various flowers Karthus had wanted to pick. Aleph greeted them at the entrance, the scent of dinner wafting through the den, and took the flowers gently from Ramach.
xxxxHe gave her a knowing smile as they settled down to eat, tucking the flowers into a spare vase they had. Then he cleared his throat and looked at Karthus. “You guys seem to have had fun.”
xxxx— We did,— Karthus replied simply, already digging in.
xxxxRamach felt the bundle of fatigue within her dissolve. She didn’t know why she felt like there was new hope blooming on the horizon, but perhaps there was, and she hadn’t let herself believe it. Karthus had been nothing but difficult, but as soon as Ramach had begun talking about magic and life and flowers, she’d settled down and listened. She thought Karthus was a lost cause, but now that thought seemed so ludicrous Ramach was bewildered she even had it at all.
xxxx— She smiled at me,— she whispered to Aleph, late at night, as they were curled up against each other in bed.
xxxx— Did she? — Aleph asked, amused.
xxxxRamach nodded. She gazed out the window at the star-spangled sky and breathed in deep. The air was alight with dewy fragrance, and her chest was lighter than it had been in a long, long time.
xxxx— Today was a good day,— she murmured, and tucked her face into Aleph’s neck sleepily.
