Biography

______Kveðja o Kvaddi

Kvaddi seeks purpose and meaning- but who doesn't?

The root of it all lies in the rejection that shaped her life. Everything had gone smoothly in her life up to then, as she'd done excellently in many things she'd tried her hand at, but it had all crumbled in a singular moment. And what, she'd asked herself, had she done to deserve such a fate?

She'd been born different, her eyes glassy and seeing a different world, whilst her siblings were blessed with normalcy. They found their own things, excelling in this or that or who knew what, whilst Kvaddi certainly saw success but found no love in it. All she could do was watch her siblings find their own paths, find love for crafts or battle or building, and she felt nothing for the many things she tried and often succeeded at. Any path she could ever have wanted was, technically, open to her but none of them called for her.

Kvaddi was forced to watch as her siblings took their places in the world, fitting so nicely into the puzzle of society, and it pained her more than she could have ever imagined it would. But there was always an answer and hers, she realized as the sun rose over the to-be Exalted lined up in the early hours, was to serve.

All dragons were welcomed into the Fortress, were welcomed into servitude for the Icewarden, and Kvaddi could be one of them.

So she trained. Learned the ways of battle, learned crafts and necessary skills for surviving in the harshest of winters, and studied the ancient texts about the Warden and his Fortress. There was nothing she wouldn't do to prepare- it was time to change. Time to change into the perfect subject.

But Fate refused her.

The Icewarden did not want her; the first rejected dragon in living memory. How does a dragon recover from such a thing? Kvaddi wonders if it is even possible.

______And The Ice Would Not Take Her

If the gods themselves rejected you, what would you do? What does it mean when a god refuses a devotee?

It was time. Years gone by flailing through life, struggling to find purpose or direction, and preparing. Then Kvaddi had found something that felt like purpose. She had learned things that wouldn't have made sense when she'd been young and confused, such as swordplay and tanning hides, but it all felt right now.

For the Fortress of Ends waited for her, and she would walk its halls alongside the other devotees. Kvaddi's heart was doing somersaults already.

Brushing away the last cobwebs from her den, Kvaddi allowed herself a moment of rest. This would no longer be her home. It was as thrilling as it was terrifying, and the thought of never seeing these walls again was bittersweet. But it was not enough to change her mind. No, nothing could change her mind now.

The room was void of all things Kvaddi, finally, a blank slate for whoever would live there next. She'd even washed the floors.

And the time to move on was here, swollen with potential and purpose. Kvaddi could not spare any possible next occupants of this chilly room more than a fleeting thought. Memories of the long nights sat in front of the scarce light she had, reading through whatever book had caught her attention that week, flashed in front of her eyes. If she tried, she could almost smell the dusty books she'd convinced Mimir to let her bring outside the Bibliotheca.

When she turned away, the memory bled into nothing, and all that remained was an empty, cold room. This was her day, her time and her journey, and lingering in the past would do her no good. It was the beginning of her new life serving under the Icewarden, contributing on a whole other level, and finding her place.

No longer would she be the indecisive, awkward dragon fumbling her way through the monthly workplace trials, nor that dragon taking every placement test and class.

She would be Kvaddi, devotee of the Warden, immortalized in his Fortress.

Many had gone before her, and many would go after her, but the here and now was hers. Her old life packed away, sorted and whittled at until everything could fit into a single pack- reduced to bare scraps of a life lived. Leaving her den for the final time felt like closing the door to that part of her life, and Kvaddi's heart fluttered all the way out into the sunshine.

Outside, the snow was drifting down from light skies, and the scattered light made the snowflakes glitter like gemstones and crystal.

A far cry from the blizzards that'd torn at their lair for the better part of a month already, Kvaddi thought. And was that not a good sign? It felt like a blessing, the soft warmth of the sun kissing her scales, the barest whisper of a breeze ruffling her feathers. How could she not take it as a good sign from the Fates?

If she squinted, and used what little imagination she had, she could almost make out the looming shadow of the Fortress high above them. No matter the thick, dark clouds shrouding it from view, it was there, and Kvaddi could swear it called to her. With the weather this calm, the path up there would be easy to navigate. The phantom pressure that'd laid on her chest all weak loosened.

Her new home, her mind supplied in an excited whisper. That is where you'll find your purpose; the Warden calls you home.

Beneath Brimir's Auge stood the hopeful Exalts, huddled together and whispering among themselves. Their guide, Syn, was watching over the spectacle with fond eyes. Syn's translucent form shimmered when the sun hit right, an array of colours scattering over frail wings of crystalline ice.

A dozen hopeful had already arrived, a myriad of colours standing out against the snow around them, and Kvaddi lifted her own wing to compare. Most of them were bright, every colour of the rainbow splashed across their hides, with beautiful patterns hiding beneath cloaks and furs. She recalled some from training in the Grim Sanctuary, and another few looked vaguely familiar from some of the crafts classes she'd taken. They were all dressed in their best, brand new gear and polished horns, looking like they belonged right there.

And then there was Kvaddi. She was the one that didn't embrace the brightest of colours, despite her bright yellow paints, and felt like a shadow among them as she joined.

Their nervous smiles reflected her own inner turmoil, they all knew this was an important day, and Kvaddi felt the doubts creeping up on her. Exchanging unnecessary words wasn't on anyone's agenda, and yet Kvaddi found she yearned for someone to speak- if only nonsense. Anything to disturb the silence, filled to the brim with anticipation, and let it shatter into something easier to manage.

No such bliss came, and Kvaddi waited with the others for a solid half hour. The sunshine that'd seemed so promising was starting to feel ominous. When something finally did change, it wasn't what she'd expected.

Kvaddi had imagined a few more excited devotees to appear, Syn to call for them all to follow her, and their journey to begin.

Instead, a dozen confused heads turned as one when wingbeats broke the stillness. A small, grey figure rode the wind towards them. Kvaddi squinted against the bright snow, absolute silence surrounding them all. A frosty Tundra bearing the Icewarden's personal sigil was sweeping towards them.

They all held their breath as the stranger landed with a soft thump, cold eyes surveying their little group. Something akin to disapproval danced in the Tundra's eyes.

Kvaddi heard how the sounds around them faded into stillness. The Valhallans around them ceased their daily activities, eyes drawn towards this stranger in their midst. All eyes were on them, for it was not common that the Icewarden send a representative to them. It was almost unheard of.

Whispers began before the Tundra even opened its mouth.

It would not surprise Kvaddi if everyone from the Councilors to the merchants would know of this within the hour. Gossip spread like wildfire on the best of days. And a tale this odd would catch the attention of even those that avoided tales like the plague.

"A still morning to you all," the Tundra greeted, its voice booming. Icicles clung to its coat. "I am here on behalf of the Warden; he has words for you to hear. I inquire you to listen."

A painful lump grew in Kvaddi's throat.

"Our Lord extends his appreciation to you all for the loyalty and strength you provide. And even so, I am to inform you that he must reject the offering you intend to bring him on this day. We cannot accept the dragon among you know as Kvaddi. There is no room for her in our halls nor a seat for her at our table."

The lump in her throat lurched. Kvaddi almost upended her breakfast there and then, a horrid chill slithering down her spine. A dozen eyes turned to her, locking onto her, and Kvaddi flinched. Their confusion was as clear as her own, yet theirs tainted with disapproval. Judgement they could not pass onto her fairly.

Terror coiled in her chest, swelling with each breath, and it hurt.

One thing was clear; the Icewarden did not want her. It was unheard of, for the path to exaltation was open to all. Except her, of course, for there was no place for her. Kvaddi did not belong anywhere.

"She..." Syn started, words soft and hesitant. "She cannot join us? I do not understand. I thought it was every dragon's right to serve the Warden if they so please."

"No," the Tundra retorted, baring its fangs, "it is not. The Warden may welcome many of his children, but not all."

It was a terribly final statement.

Rejection.

And Kvaddi felt something bitter brewing in her chest, simmering beneath the humiliated anger seeping into her. Was this betrayal? It felt like betrayal, yet Kvaddi had never felt it before.

She could not think of any other word to describe the sensation.

Syn glanced over at her, not quite meeting Kvaddi's eyes. And Kvaddi knew what she would say- 'you cannot come.' None of them would defy a god for her, this she knew, and she could not blame them.

Before anyone could speak another word, the overwhelmed mixture of feelings overflowed. Kvaddi took to the skies, ignoring the startled gasps from those around her, and allowed the humid breeze to steer her away. She did not look back. There was too much rushing through her, a million thoughts beyond her comprehension. And the pain in her chest was all too real.

Kvaddi closed her eyes as she breached the clouds above. Her heart thrummed a terrified song; misery and shame.

What did it mean, she had to wonder. What would a dragon have to do wrong to deserve such rejection from their own god? Why was she the one unwanted and thrown away? Was her lifetime of secluded insecurity not enough?

And, most of all, what would she do now?
