Vates yearns for the finer things in life. He feels like he deserves them, and he feels little to no remorse for those he scams to get his riches. Though his work somewhat requires him to travel, Vates hates anything he considers 'dirty' or 'beneath him' and will quickly find a room at the finest inn the moment he steps foot in any sort of civilization.

His whole life has structured itself around the lie that he can see the future, and as a result he has to be cunning. Vates tends to tell customers what they want to hear and he is willing to pay for information so that he knows what they are truly hoping to hear from him.

Vates was born to a lower class family in a clan far-away. If anyone asks where he comes from, Vates waves away the question or spouts some mystical falsehood to make himself seem more impressive. The truth is that he was nothing special.

He started out making money by scamming people with small sidewalk games in order to support his family, and eventually began to lust after riches and wealth for his own purposes. Instead of handing over his earnings to his mother, Vates would hoard it up until he had enough to purchase himself some sort of fancy trinket.

By the time he was old enough to leave home, Vates left and never looked back. He had had his future read by an old seer-woman a few years prior and had been captivated by the riches that she seemed to make from the poor fools who fell for her act. He just needed to work on his act and get all of the kinks out, hopefully once he was far away from the depressing and oppressive home that he once lived in.

It took him a relatively short amount of time to perfect his craft, all things considered. Vates tried water-scrying and tarot before landing on fire-scrying. Vates uses fire and ash to pretend to read the futures of those who fall for his scam. The ambiguity of the ash piles that he rifles through and 'reads' allows him a modicum of protection against those who would challenge his interpretations. That, and he personally thinks it looks more impressive than simply casting bones or plucking at cards.

He very quickly suckered a few old widows and widowers into paying him regularly for at-home readings - and he made sure to tell them exactly what they wanted to hear so they would keep coming back for more. Once he gathered enough money and felt that he may have overstayed his welcome, Vates decided that he should become a bit of a wandering act.

Years down the line, he stumbled upon Sylvhurst and decided to stay for a bit. So far, he seems to be doing somewhat okay for himself in town - though the other seer does steal a bit of his business and seems to be hellbent on running him out of town.

Iridin
Enemy

Vates views Iridin as more of an annoyance than anything. He's constantly handing out visions of doom and gloom to people who visit for a reading, and Vates has been the subject of more than three visits from Iridin that border on threatening. Iridin seems to have a problem with Vates' 'fake abilities' and the fact that he's 'scamming' people. Each time, Vates has simply acted dumb and brushed off Iridin - he hasn't been the first true seer that Vates has dealt with and he won't be the last.
