I will see you next time.

Mind racing, Candy leapt across Silver, intercepting the clan leader’s range of attack and jumping into the tornado of darkness. The grey Coatl widened her eyes in shock, trying to pull him away from the Shade. But she was too far, and the entity’s arms much closer. It welcomed him, greeting him with total agony. As the pain seared through his whole being, the Spiral wrapped himself in his wings, the dark entity chipping away at his magic as he sunk deeper into his agony. The pain was worth it, and the results would be too if he died. Memories began to flood back, stretching the seconds into a seeming eternity...

Candy tapped the syringe against the glass cylinder, the excess luminescent contents dripping away from the needle and into the cylinder. He swivelled around in excitement, almost launching himself off his rotating seat in the process to face Bobba, his mate, who was staring into one of his glass tanks in his lab. “Till death do us apart no more,” he laughed, proudly admiring the swirling liquid in the glass syringe. After cleaning this arm, he took in a breath, jabbing the needle into his skin. Bobba turned around to watch as the shiny, translucent potion disappeared from the syringe and entered his body.

The Spiral exhaled sharply, bearing with the discomfort. “Is that the potion that’ll make us...reincarnate together?” Bobba questioned, eyeing the now-empty syringe suspiciously. Candy was always adventurous, whereas she was calm, and not as impulsive. Bobba often wondered if he’d ever get himself killed experimenting so much, despite his cajoling words whenever she expressed her concern.

“Now I’ll need to do it for you,” he nodded, deftly flicking away the used needle for a fresh, new one. It gleamed under the bright lights in his lab, which were powered by one of their clan mages who was responsible for the lights in the whole clan. Bobba was used to seeing needles; it was a part of being a mate to Candy, who was often creating new concoctions and medicine for the clan, but it didn’t stop her fear when she was on the receiving end of a needle. “Relax, I’ll do it quickly,” he reassured her, grinning at his trembling mate as he dipped the tip into the liquid in the cylinder and pulled the top to suck up the reincarnation potion. “Please face me…”

A panicked scream rang out on the battlefield, causing all the dragons to whirl around in shock. Candy stopped firing light beams to face the source of the ear-blasting sound and almost collapsed at the sight. Matted white fur, greyed by the dirt, lifeless purple eyes and limp wings. Yellow, blue and pink splashes colored the dead dragon’s pelt, making Candy freeze.

“B-Bobba?” he whispered, tears springing out from his eyes. The ground swayed under his feet, and his head spun with a thousand thoughts of grief. Why you? In a split-second, his sadness changed to anger, and Candy began to race toward the Shade with a snarl, hurling his whole being at the destructive Shade. The adrenaline and his emotions nullified any form of fear he harboured, but just as he was about to enter the cloud of black, his clan mates retrained him, pulling him back from his suicidal front. A scatter of magic attacks collapsed on the entity, and then with a “poof” it disappeared, just like how his mate had done so.

I’ll be there soon enough.

Reality rushed back to him, a tight slap from the present. He let out a cry of pain, the black clouding his vision like a crashing wave. The pain will be worth it. The Shade’s magic seeped into him, and he could feel his magic ebb away. “I promise,” he muttered softly to an imaginary Bobba that came to his mind, complete with her gentle smile and colorful pelt. His last words escaped through pained breaths, which finally came to a halt as his life was drained away.

The ground was lush, a gentle wind caressing him. Candy blinked awake, his whole body numb. It worked. He was sprawled on a vast grass field, the ends almost unseeable. He pulled himself off the ground, trying to shake off the heavy feel of his limbs and wings. The sky stretched over him, a clear, cloudless canvas of bright blue. Suddenly, it morphed into the face of a white Tundra, yellow, blue and pink splashes lining her fluffy fur.

“Bobba.” Candy smiled, relief spreading throughout his being.

"Looks like your concoctions did the opposite of killing us," his mate joked, a smile playing on her mouth as she blinked back tears of joy.

"I told you, my creations are safe!" he rebutted, swatting her paw away playfully. Despite this, he couldn't stop the smile from forming.
