Biography

"Sona" means "Snow" in High Valyrian.

It is known that Tundra dragons are as white as the icy wastes they live in. Sometimes, a dragon shows hints of blue or ashy grey, but those colours are only ever pale, and they always come secondary to the white. Only when foreign breeds are introduced the pure Tundra colouring is muddied or diluted. So, when Sona hatched with a midnight coat to two pureblooded parents, his father immediately assumed the worst: adultery. The father left before Sona had even been named.

Sona's mother was devastated for, despite her apparent dishonour, she had never lain with another dragon. Her hatchling was a pure Tundra dragon, just an abnormality, a mutation. So, out of spite for those who would call her only son illegitimate, she named him Sona, after the snow his pelt so starkly contrasted.

Sona lived with his mother in the ancestral ice plains of the Tundra dragons until he was grown. From an early age, he and his mother were shunned by villages for "diluting the blood", whatever that meant. Naturally, they avoided settlements for as long as Sona was young, but they could not avoid them forever. All dragons mature, and Sona was no exception.

Within a year, Sona yearned for the company of a mate. He was young and handsome, yet every female denied his advances. None of them would even chance a dragon who deviated from the pure Tundra colouration; none of them would ever chance a lovechild.

Sona couldn't stand it: the taunts, the jeers, the exclusion... it made him feel sick. And, one night, he snapped like a string pulled too taut. In the darkness, it was easy for a midnight-coated dragon to slip away from his mother, to fly North - far North, as North as North went. Sona flew for nights and days through the ice which thawed as he went, growing shallower and fractured and warmer.

He had never known heat. In the Icefield, the only warmth came from the sun, and even that great light could barely touch the chill of the Southern winds. Yet, in the North, warmth pervaded him. It was in the air, feather-light and breezy as it filled your lungs. It was in the ground, radiant and soft sinking into your feet. It was in the water, hot and bubbly when it soaked you through. Although his thick fur and broad frame was built for the freezing Southern landmass, Sona took an immediate liking to the heat.

Zaldrizes was a Northern Fae dragon with white eyes. Northern dragons had a vast wealth of eye colours, more than Sona had ever imagined possible, yet he had never seen a Northerner with white eyes. Not until he encountered Zaldrizes.

If it had been anyone else, Sona would have pondered this detail for a short while before forgetting and never thinking about it again, but Zaldrizes didn't Sona forget. No, Zaldrizes had stolen something from Sona, something very precious.

Zaldrizes had stolen his heart.

The two, as all great friends did, met in at the shore of a pool. Sona saw Zaldrizes first, and the Fae was the most beautiful dragon he'd ever seen. Of course, Sona announced this immediately, earning Zaldrizes' attention. A Fae dragon's curiosity may be easy to attract, but their focus is nigh impossible to. Yet, Sona managed it. If he hadn't, the two likely would have never made a connection, never would have shared anything more than a thoughtful glance.

Sona wooed Zaldrizes with songs of praise - he really had a beautiful voice and Zaldrizes fell for it hard. When they left the poolside, they left together, with tails entwined like snakes in lovesick knot. The two mated, and eventually settled together, on one of the Northernmost islands in the Southern continent - a compromise, for Zaldrizes had always loved the cold. Together, they started a clan where no dragon would be judged like Sona was. It was a clan of heat and a clan of frost.
