If only things had turned out differently...
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮

Sometimes, she wished she'd been an only child.

As noble and dutiful as her family was, there wasn't much emphasis on "family". It didn't help that her siblings were just like her parents, or that their middle children never seemed to need them, the non eldest, the non youngest. They were busy- always busy. Busy running their hidden clan, busy patrolling the prisons, busy checking stores and shipments to make sure everything was there. But that was the point, wasn't it? They ran a business, not a charity. And for her, a middle child with nothing to prove? She wasn't worth their time.

She was tired of them.

One night, a particularly cold, snowy night, she left. She had nowhere to go- did she really need somewhere to be? She just went. Without a coat, it didn't take long for her pale, exposed skin to freeze, for her blood to begin cooling and slowing, but she didn't care. There was only one place she was going, and that was out. If anyone was going to survive a storm, to find... another life... it shouldn't be her. But it would be.

A short while passed. Seconds turned to minutes. Minutes turned to hours. Her legs became harder and harder to move, and she'd all but given up on flight. Alright, so maybe she was more sensitive to weather than the others. Maybe that was why the prison was their only care. It's not like she was special. She was just another one of them, so what difference would there be? After a while... their ways became the truth. Truth that made her collapse in the snow, weak from exertion.

She had no idea how long she'd been in the storm, but it seemed like days had gone by when she woke to a lofty, weathered gaoler tugging a blanket over her.

"Khhoti, get her out of here. Her kind isn't welcome here and you know that."

"Hey, leave her alone. I found her half to death near the edge of the glacier."

"Shame you didn't leave her." Rage.

All she felt was rage. Who was he to be telling her she didn't deserve to live? That her kind
deserved all the death that happened to them? Another place that didn't want her, and she didn't have enough strength to even keep her eyes open.

Great.

"Here, drink." The gaoler- Khhoti?- must've noticed her movements, as after a heartbeat, a paw was propping her head up and holding a warm liquid to her mouth. Gravity did the rest. "It looked like you'd been out there for a few days. If it'd been any longer, you'd have just been another dragon lost to the storms."

A huff from her left, and she wearily opened her eyes to see Khhoti whack a skydancer in the face with his tail. When they closed, it felt like all the weight had been taken off her shoulders as she fell into a long, dreamless sleep.

When they opened again, Khhoti was gone, and the skydancer the only thing between her and the door. "Why are you here?"

No time for niceties.

Feeling significantly better, she lifted the blanket off of her and took a step away from the fire. "What, in the icefields? We live here."

A look. "No, bones, not the icefields. Here. The tundra. My inn."

"Is there someplace else you wanted me not to freeze to death?"

"Not here. So get out."

Her eyes narrowed, and she took out the one thing she brought with her- the one thing that'd change his mind.

The clink of gold coins rustled in the bag as she dropped it in front of him. Warily, the innkeeper picked it up, weighing it in his talons. After a few seconds, he sighed, giving her a cold, vicious look. "A week, then?"

"Thank you."

"Name?"

Name? She didn't think she'd ever had one. After all that time with her family, they hadn't even given her the grace to be acknowledged, let alone given a name. Perhaps what came the closest was "ungrateful little cretin", one of her siblings' loving nicknames. That was her name, wasn't it?

She didn't want it to be. She wanted it to be... hers.

"Frostbite." A name she earned as much as she lived.
