Biography

With morale in doubt and our pride run out, no honor did I see
All I seen were a thousand dreams piled dead in front of me

Before you go
Was there something I coulda said to make your heart beat better?
If only I'da known you had a storm to weather

So before you go
Was there something I coulda said to make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless

some notes:

• former Mentor who's been placed on indefinite bereavement leave after her Master, General Karau, was killed

she was once a Mentor, which is a role in Jahi indicating that a member has reached seniority in their position, is notably responsible and skilled in it, and has therefore been selected to train newer members in the trade. because they have more trust in their factions than their peers, they tend to work personally with the leaders of their faction as well!

this was the case for Enyo, who was both a soldier and a Mentor. she worked very closely to her clan's General, a blood mage titled General Savas, and was both appreciated by him and admired by the rest of their faction due to her loyalty and strength. her General wasn't the most personable man, but her clan and especially the people in it were always her everything; nothing made her happier than working with them.

or so she thought!
then came the day where her General and his mate Kora had their very first hatchling, a son named Atieno!
and then not too long later, she got summoned by the leader of her clan, their Savior herself, who assigned her the prestigious task of being the one to train the young master (Atieno) in the art of magic!!! this was a first in the clan's history and she was ecstatic! it was the best day of her life!!

she was over the moon coming up with child-safe ways to help him harness his magic (he was a blood mage as well, who're kind of nightmares as hatchlings since they have no grasp on their powers) and he... wasn't nearly as excited. but his mom was a pretty introverted lady herself, so he must've gotten that from her, right?

as he grew into his role, she found him to be much more benevolent than his father. he spoke softer, babysat the hatchlings of the clan, went back to save his soldiers when they got too injured to keep up, visited them as they recovered, and gently yet firmly used his position in the clan to get his soldiers better benefits: better medicine and food, more rest days, etc. he never did match her enthusiasm and was in fact much, much quieter and reserved than his father was, but it wasn't an unpleasant change at all; the love and admiration his clan held for him extended far beyond their faction, and the massive morale spike once he came into power reflected that.

so I'm sure you can imagine her surprise when she woke up to an awful ruckus one morning, wandered out of her den, and was met with only a few members of her clan scattered around their territory. before she could blink the sun out of her eyes or ask what was going on, her Savior was marching towards her and asking if she knew. when she shook her head, she was informed in no uncertain terms that Atieno had defected that morning and was promptly killed for his betrayal.

that marked the moment where she never felt quite right again.

miraculously she was allowed to wander outside and was met with an awful sight— blood and feathers streaked along the ground, clanmates she loved and viewed as brothers- and sisters-in-arms solemnly returning over the hill covered in blood she suspected wasn't theirs.

she doesn't know how long she stayed out there crouched near that trail of blood, nor does she know when she returned to her clan. what she does know is that her Savior put her on indefinite leave from both her role as Soldier and Mentor "to allow for grieving nd recuperation" (which later proved to be more out of suspicion that she knew this'd happen but chose not to report or stop it) and— the part that bothers her the most— her Savior was lying.

she was going around saying that Atieno never cared for them, that he always planned to hurt them like this in the end. but Enyo knew this wasn't right. she spent so much time with him— she knew him ever since he was a hatchling! she saw him risk life and limb to save clanmates no one would've expected him to go back for! she saw him take time away from his work to wax fairytales for the excited little hatchlings who wanted to talk to him! as his right-hand woman, she was extremely in tune with his body language and she knew when he was genuinely concerned! he wasn't faking that!! he couldn't've been! they loved him and he loved them, she knew he did! he wouldn't do something so out of the blue unless—?

unless..?
that was right— he wasn't an impulsive man like his father, not in the slightest. if he defected, that meant he had planned it beforehand.. and she didn't catch on?
there was no way he didn't know the grief his departure would cause— so he must've.. seen that as a negligible con to leaving...?

but— why did he leave? he had everything, to the point where his position and good standing with their Savior was envied by those around him. she thought he was content, if nothing else.

but she thought she was more attentive to his moods before then, too.

she began to think back to their past and, to her horror, she noticed a pattern.

her Master was always a quiet and reclusive man, but he always seemed a bit.. sad, maybe. he never shared the excitement, determination, or glory that his father wore, but neither did Kora (his mother)— and he always seemed tired, but he was a busy man, how could he not be?

there was one moment she remembered.
there's a condition that causes premature death in some dragons with powerful magic due to their magic exceeding the capabilities of their body, and as a blood mage, General Savas was at heightened risk for the condition— which unfortunately took him not long after Atieno's ~16th* birthday.
as she was offering her condolences to his family, she remembers how her Savior immediately tried to force Atieno into his rightful role as General mere hours after he got the news of his father's passing.
Enyo wasn't one to argue with her superiors, but she immediately stepped in to protect her young master, who was too stricken with grief to respond. though she was depressed to learn that her General had passed away, even she knew that none would be worse off than his surviving relatives, and she didn't stop arguing until her Savior relented and gave Atieno time to grieve and gave Enyo permission to help him with his work going forward, as she refused to back down from her stance that he was still too young to lead.
he didn't speak a word throughout the entire ordeal, but he seemed ever slightly more relaxed around her in the following months.

another blurrier memory is one where they were alone together as he worked, and out of nowhere, he asked her a question about [what it means to be a part of Jahi to her, etc..]**, which stood out to her due to how uncharacteristic it was for him to initiate a conversation. maybe it's her grief playing tricks on her, but she blanked out on her own response and instead remembered just how sad he looked when she answered. she thought that was just his resting expression, but now she has doubts.

as months went by and she continued scraping her memories for something, anything that could help her make sense of the situation, she slowly began to think that something was going on right beneath her nose. her Master was a very observant man— he had to have noticed something she didn't, and she can't shake the feeling that her Savior— no, Sonja, who certainly hasn't "saved" anyone— was involved in some way. Atieno was her protégé, and if there was anyone who'd notice a change in his behavior if not Enyo herself, it'd be her, so why was she surprised? why was she so quick to turn on him after singing his praises for so long? it didn't make sense.

though she struggles for concrete answers, she can't scrounge up anything more than beliefs past a reasonable doubt. stripped of her rank and being handled at arms-length by Sonja, she knows the scrutiny she's under is far too great for her to safely go digging for clues, but what's left for her now? having pulled away from the rest of her clan out of grief and suspicion, the only thing she had to latch onto was the memory of her Master, whose death she cant come to terms with. no body was ever found— maybe he survived! several of her clanmates attested that he was last seen so heavily injured and delirious that there was no way he could've survived, but she didn't believe them. her Master could be out there somewhere.. but she can't think of a way she'll ever be able to see him again.

she swore to herself that the only day she'd believe reports of his death would be the day she died and saw him waiting for her. she just hopes she'll be able to, at the very least, bring light to the tragedy of his life before Sonja gets to her, too.

her longtime friends within the clan pity the newer members who only know her by her reclusive behavior, disheveled appearance, and near inaudible muttering to herself that rarely sounds a little something like "master", when they first got the privilege of knowing her as the loud, excitable, and dorky dragon she once was— but they have no hope of getting that dragon back.

how the mighty fall.

*not exactly that age? in my lore, ~500 is near the end of an avg lifespan. Enyo would be about ~300 in the current day.
