JOB DESCRIPTION
Merak previously had a number of important roles in the clan, besides his job as a finder of knowledge; he was formerly a keeper of records, keeping logs of the goings on in the clan, including the arrival of new dragons, deaths, and the building of new structures (due to his so often being absent from the clan, and how he normally had to be given long briefs on these events before he could make note of them, two other dragons took over this duty; he still holds all of the knowledge in his head, though, which is just as important); he was an advisor to his mother, Amina, using his vast knowledge to help her make informed decisions, at least when he was around; and most importantly he was the primary liason to other clans, working as his mother's mouthpiece to carefully build bonds with clans all over Sornieth during his travels.

As leader of the clan, Merak has taken on a much different role from the ones he previously held. He's still figuring things out, though he's already made a large decision on behalf of the clan: moving from the jungles and forests of the Labyrinth to the much different environment that is Dragonhome.

PERSONALITY
Merak is an extremely curious individual, nearly to a fault. He can be very kind, in particular to his sister, but for the most part would most accurately be described as distant. His mind is often elsewhere whenever he is home, and he grows restless and verging on cranky when he remains at the clan for longer than a week.

Since becoming the leader of Bristlecone, now known as Ortus since their move to Dragonhome, Merak has had to, for lack of a better word, mature quite a bit. No longer able to leave at the drop of a hat, he's growing used to staying in one place for a long period of time. The change of scenery has helped; exploring the many nearby ruins and caves and such offers him a great deal of satisfaction.

EARLY LIFE
The secondhatched child to Amina and Iskan, the former clan leaders, Merak has always had a wanderer's heart. If not being constantly watched, his parents would often find him a good distance away from his and his sister's nest, wide-eyed and observing the world around him. His sister, though less observant, would usually follow him, wishing to remain at his side. As Merak grew, the limits to where he could go shrunk, progressively traveling further and further from the clan, but always returning come nightfall.

It was with a great amount of quiet excitement that Merak was finally given permission by his mother to take his exploring to the next level. Amina knew of her son's passion, of course, and decided to put it to good use; Merak may go wherever he wish, for as long as he wished, so long as he would keep logs of the things he learned and the places he went, to further the clan as a whole's knowledge. While by then Merak was nearly a year old, he considers this decision by his mother to untether him from the clan the true beginning of his life.

For a long while, Merak traveled on his own, very occasionally joined by his sister. It was not until his and Verin's son, Alwyn, came of age and decided that he wished to join his father in his travels that Merak even considered bringing along any of his clanmates. So, while Alwyn remains his constant companion as well as his assistant, any number of dragons now occasionally join him on his expeditions. While a few of them actually help with his observations, he often serves as more of a guide than anything, teaching the other dragons about their surroundings.

Despite his explorations, Merak has yet to find his charge, so far as he knows. He claims to not feel the "pull" that his mother and son have described to him, and as such his mother had her suspicions as to what his charge truly is.

CURRENT
While Merak was away during one of his longer explorations, his parents' clan found itself the victim of a hostile takeover by the clan's half-mad Nature Priestess. Only returning once the clan had been won back, Merak found the clan in a state of flux; his mother was missing, quite possibly dead despite his father's insistence to the contrary, and his father had no wish to lead the clan. Stepping up at the insistence of his father, his mate, and a number of others in the clan, Merak took control of the clan, though leading was never something he had wished for himself.
