The rising sun beat down onto Galinn as he worked to spin the sap of an old Kapok tree. Alone for now, he let his mind wander and thought back on the past few months. He had certainly been through a lot, but the changes had largely been positive. If you had told him seven months ago that he would be where he was now, he’d have never believed you.

Mabel wasn’t by any means a pretty, nor very noble, queen. Her lair was barely 50 strong when Galinn had first met her, at his parent’s lair in the Cloudscrap Crags. But he was none the less interested in speaking with her, as most of his other siblings stayed in the Southern Icefield fighting by his mother’s side, as she was a powerful mage from the Starfall Isles. Naturally adept in magic, they worked hard to keep their lair safe from beastclans, but this life was harrowing, and Galinn didn’t have much interest in magic or fighting. His parents were honestly shocked that a queen from all away across Sornieth was interested in meeting him, and were even more shocked when she actually made it, with an entourage of a sparkling guardian and a massive gaoler in tow. Despite being only dressed in a single necklace, she carried herself with grace, and her gargantuan companions seemed fiercely loyal to her. Galinn knew nothing of ruling but was eager to have his chance at a life outside of battle.

During the meeting, he had learned that her lair, called Palus Pond, was moving to the Gladeveins, but had an unfortunate accident in the Scarred Wasteland that resulted in the death of her last mate. Her lair had been in a state of disarray ever since, and she felt it was time to find them a new king. She explained that because she had been alone for the past few months, she was used to ruling alone, and therefor Galinn would have time to settle in and learn the ways of the Nature Flight and her lair. But she felt having a king present was necessary to maintaining cohesion during the move away from the Everbloom gardens. All he had to be was generally soothing and help where he could during the construction of a new lair. If Galinn thought he was up to the task, he could leave with her tomorrow morning.

Galinn was nervous at first, but if he was being honest, the thought of staying in the Southern Icefields made him feel worse. He had seen the aftermath of battles since he was a hatchling, and he was scared to fight the armies of longnecks and centaurs that roamed the Southern Icefield. Mabel’s lair sounded peaceful, despite the accident with her last mate, and he would have a chance to be more than a foot soldier. As he slept that night, he imagined the warm air and lush trees of the Viridian Labyrinth, and was excited to travel to his new home, away from the cold battles of the Icefields.

The way was long to the Viridian Labyrinth, but with ground cover provided by the gaoler, named Xanthura, and a ride from the guardian, an ambassador for the Southern Icefields named Pteron, it was ultimately a simple journey. When he arrived to the Gladeveins, Pteron touched down beside the largest tree growing by the muddy banks of a massive bend in the river.

“Your first job will be to help construct the home for which the fae dragons will live.” Said Mabel. “I am going to the Everbloom Gardens to see how the move is going from our royal advisor. You will meet him soon. The other fae will be with you shortly.” Before Galinn could say anything else, she took off with Pteron in toe. Only Xanthura stayed behind, and only regarded him with a look before jumping across the river, pacing the woods on the far shore. He was alone to begin construction on a new nest, unsure of how to begin as he had only been asked to find sap for repairs before.

Fortunately, soon arrived his favorite part of Palus Pond; the rest of the fae who lived with Mabel in her diminutive palace. There were only three others, a family. First was Cake, the ambassador to the Starfall Isles, and her mate Rye, the head of the lair guard. Finally, was their son, Bunny, who made fashions for the lair. Cake greeted Galinn warmly while Rye set to work on the palace, who shortly encouraged Galinn to begin shaping sap. So, engrossed he was with the new family he barely realized the trickle of other breeds coming into the clearing, the Mabel fliting between different groups, followed by a black and white coatl who he would later learn was the advisor, named Clarus.

His days since then had largely been involved with working alongside Rye, to organize the guard against the beastclans of the Viridian Labyrinth. At first, he was nervous, but soon he realized that there was little hard work, nor fear of failure, as Xanthura was deft in battle against all her foes. Even the occasional hostile dragon was often little match for her. It was as if she fought along side dragons the rest of them couldn’t see, but she was so busy and solitary my nature that Galinn never once spoke at length with her about much. When that was done, he would meet with Mabel and Clarus to learn the news of the day, usually the results of food gathering trips of excavations. Then he was usually free to do as he pleased, and he usually spent that time with his friend, Bunny, delighting in his fashion sense and creativity. He found he didn’t really have to do much outside of the fae palace to fulfill his role as king, outside of all too often diplomatic trip with Mabel. There he frequently had to sooth over fights between her and other lairs, and make sure the ambassadors and other members of Palus Pond did not cause trouble. He found dealing with many in Palus Pond a headache, but from Cake he learned he was largely liked by his fellow member of the Pond, who found him much kinder than Mabel. He found the work of a king was far safer than that of a soldier.

The sound of a loud crash jolted him from his memories. He looked down to see a dark spot form in the sea of green below him; a tree had fallen, and in the shadows, he spied Xanthura, branches matting in her mane and eye wild.

Dragons began shooting out in all directions. More roars erupted as he saw two more gaolers, the mysterious River and Tarnen, attack Xanthura. His heart dropped as he watched his most trusted warrior get swamped under two whirlwinds of dark fur.

Suddenly Cake was next to him. She crests were plastered against her neck as she spoke.
“Oh Galinn, it’s horrible. Two of your subjects were fighting, and then suddenly Xanthura lashed out. She started attacking anyone near by and…oh, she got Rye!”

She crashed into him as her wings stopped moving, crushed by grief. But neither fae had long to mourn as they felt the tree limp they were standing on quake. They looked down to see Xanthura clawing up the bottom of the massive tree.

“Infidels! Worthless frauds! You will all face your end today!”

She started charging up the tree, and in a rush Galinn pushed Cake off and took to the skies. He looked down to see the Kapok fall while Cake circled where the crown of the tree once stood.

He remembered back to something his mother once said. That to a warrior, defeating the hardest of foes was always the goal. The best at any craft should always strife for what is almost impossible. But to always be aware of what was beyond one’s limits, and when the situation seemed to have no recourse for victory, that a retreat was always best when lives were on the line. No dragon’s life was worth a chance at glory.

Galinn turned and flew east across the jungle, never looking back to see what fate befell his queen, nor his friends.

After days of travel, he smacks the ground. Galinn was tired, flying for days without a blink of sleep. He enjoyed the warmth of the stone below his body and the sun above him. his eyes slowly close, unaware that he was being watched.

Time goes by, everything is cold now. He started to wake up.

"Hello?"
She mutters

Galinn opens his eyes, looking into blood red eyes, the fae that owns then was beautifully.

"Hello there... im Galinn"
He said, smiling a little

She smiles and look down, before slipping away. I followed her, in her cave she sat there. He recognizes her, shes Oriona, a theif from the plague lands. She seems sweet, why do they give her a bad rap?

He has read about her past... she is just trying to live. She snaps around to see Galinn at the mouth of her home. His fins are pinned down as if he thinks that he did something wrong.

"Galinn... whats wrong"

"I know who you are Oriona... but you don't seem as bad as they make you out to be..."

Oriona had a face of shock, she never expected to be trusted?
