"I still remember what the sun looked like as it crested the horizon, I remember the display of colors as they streaked across the sky in their splendor. I remember the sight of the stream, the fish swimming lazily in the waters, how the moon glinted off the gentle ripples. I remember laughing as the flocks of butterflies flew in the meadow, looking for a place to land and rest before they continued on their journey south."

Baltris paused to take in a shaky breath, as if thinking back on these precious memories was painful to him. Maybe they were.

"I remember your face." He continued, in a whisper now. "Your smile, how kind your eyes were. When I met you the whole world turned upside down and I thought for the first time I knew what it was like to have a friend. An honest, true friend."

His expression turned dark and his head snapped toward the dragon before him.

They listened silently, not moving, not making a sound. If Baltris hadn't heard them come up, hadn't heard their all too familiar voice in greeting, he might have thought he was alone.

"That was before you took my sight." He continued, voice like a freshly honed dagger. "And now you're back. Why are you back? What more are you going to take from me?"
