This one was a child.

It was always worse when they were children.

A Spiral drifted through the frigid air, his serpentine body flitting about like a ribbon on a breeze. His familiar had spotted another poor soul caught in the Cold's vicegrip, and he knew he had precious little time to get there before that wretched Queen. The little mouse darted about, still careful not to alert any predators, even when safe in the shadow of his master. Soon, the mouse took a turn and the Spiral, Solace, knew deep in his heart that he'd arrived.

Taking a moment to himself, he adjusted the tiny bells on his body and looked to the colorful wisps escaping his body. He knew what that ethereal mist was, but the poor dear ahead likely didn't. And that was what mattered.

With everything now perfect, he followed his mouse companion to see a poor Tundra ensnared in old bones and brambles. It took everything in his power to not try and free the child from them, as he knew too well they'd become more possessive and kill the child faster. The tiny dragon looked up at him in fear, and Solace offered a warm smile and shook his head, ringing his little bells.

"Fear not, little one," he soothed as the ball of shivering fluff attempted to get away. "I wish you no harm. What's your name?"

"T-Truffle..." the tiny dragon stammered, trying to blink away his frozen tears. "Wh-what is this place...? Who are you--?"

Solace only bowed a little and wrapped himself around the poor creature, offering a little bit of warmth. "I am Solace, dear Truffle, and I am here to help." Quickly, he focused on his power and allowed the colorful lights about him to swell and grow, encasing them in a little opalesque dome. Its walls swirled with every color, and Solace jiggled his horns a little to ring his bells a bit more. The sound was cheerful, bright, and in the safety of the dome's illusion, Truffle's binds began to loosen. The tiny Tundra was astounded by the display, but his attention came back to Solace as the Spiral began to speak once more.

"Little Truffle," he began with a warm smile, "These walls are magic. But not just any magic, no-- they can grant wishes. So tell me, sweet boy, what's your wish? Where do you want to be more than anywhere else, right now?"

Truffle swallowed and looked to the dome. It didn't take long for the answer to come, and Solace already knew what it would be. It was always the same answer. "Home."

"Home," Solace lovingly echoed, and nodded. "Of course. Now, I need you to focus on home, ok? I need you to bring up your best memories of home and what you felt like when you were there. Can you do that?" With Truffles nod, Solace happily jingled the bells on his horns and hands, earning a tiny giggle. "Ok. Squeeze your eyes shut, and I promise, when I tell you to open them, you'll be home."

Eager to leave the wretched Cold, Truffle did as he was told and Solace focused. His magic pulsed with the little Tundra's memories, and suddenly, the colorful walls of his dome vanished. The Cold was gone. They were in a warm cave, decorated with lights and knicknacks. Solace smiled up at the happy environment, and the loving family at the mouth of the cave. "Ok, Truffle... open your eyes."

The tiny Tundra obeyed, and upon seeing himself back in his home, and seeing what had to be his family so near, he squeaked with joy. However, though the brambles that had him pinned were invisible from the illusion, they kept him rooted. "Why... why can't I move?" he whimpered, looking to Solace. Those huge, sweet eyes hurt to look at. "I want to go to Mom and Dad!"

Solace nodded slowly. "I understand. You need to let go, ok? Focus on how much you want to be with them... and you'll be able to go. I promise. Just focus, dear Truffle. You can go home."

Truffle huffed, a bit frightful, but still determined. If only the poor dear hadn't been caught in this place... he might have made a truly great Tundra. To keep his spirit light, Solace jingled the bells a bit more, urging Truffle on. "Go on, dear. You can make it. Just focus... and let go of that weight you feel. Focus on home... on family... on warmth and love. You'll get there. I promise."

The child grunted and struggled, and finally, his feet came free. In that moment, Solace felt his heart break and soar simultaneously. Little Truffle giggled and laughed as he rushed to the cave mouth, bounding like the pup he was. When he reached the edge of the dome, the illusion disappeared, as did Truffle along with it. The Cold was there again, refreshing its blanket of snow. Solace looked down to see the tiny Tundra's body crumple limply into the brambles' grasp. He was gone.

There was a small squeak at Solace's side; the pocketmouse reminded him not to stay too long near the brambles, and Solace moved away in kind. The Spiral adjusted the bells on his horns, not wanting them to jingle while he traveled, and couldn't help the tears that began to shed. This place was so cruel... That innocent children could be caught in it to only suffer and die alone... that their bodies and souls were like firewood to keep it going... It was painful to witness. Even though he could lessen the fear and terror of dying, it still pained him to see beings so full of life simply... wither in front of him.

Solace flinched as he retracted the magic back to himself. Every time he used his power, a little more of himself was sucked away. Soon, he'd find himself in his own set of brambles and the rest of his soul would be mercilessly sundered. But... until then, the least he could do was bring some light, some hope into this forsaken wasteland. It was the only way he held hope for himself.

He turned to his little mouse friend and nodded. He was ready to find another.
