Sornieth must fall in ashes and blood in order to rise. An old order of the Ages is born anew. These were the words burned into the ground before the grieving pair’s feet, scarce clawtips from the stillborn infant still lying in the crushed shell surrounding it. Before either fearful dragon could react, the pieces of shell caught flames, surrounding the child. With a scream of fear, the mother lunged for her baby, desperate not to lose the body, even if she’d already lost the little soul inhabiting it. Fire curled around her claws, making her drop him with a wail of dismay…and the baby did not fall. It hung suspended in the air, fire circling it in a wisping whip of lapping flames. The baby, dead at birth, opened its eyes, leaving both of its parents transfixed. There was no warm brown light, no trusting love that a newborn should have. Instead, the eyes blazed with molten heat, staring at, no, through, the bereaved parents. The mother began to cry, realizing too late what she had done. The moment the shell had cracked, no delightful little peeps of a newborn to greet her, she’d begun to pray, frantically, fervently, to any deity that would listen, begging for the life of her child. The life, not the soul. She now had to live with the consequences of her actions – the Firebird was born, a curse to punish the audacity of all those of Sornieth who would defy the natural order of life and death. Despite the horror of his birth, Firebird’s family remained within the clan with the blessing of the Triumvirate – the parents had done nothing truly wrong, after all, merely mourned as any new parent would have. The strange little hatchling remained in the clan as well, though he was largely shunned, leading a solitary life with only his fearful parents as company. Though he dreamed during the day of the day when he would be accepted by the rest of the clan and lead a normal life, his dreams at night were nightmares where he was the cause. He dreamed of flying across Sornieth in a blaze of hot, crackling fire, razing fields and clans to ashes, leaving thousands homeless or dead. The more he burned, the more dead collected among the cinders in his wake, too many for Death and his ward to ferry. He dreamed of turning the world of the living into a world of death, one much worse than anything beyond the Veil. This world would be one of misery unending. |

At a loss, Firebird contemplated leaving everything behind, giving in to the need to burn and taking himself somewhere where he could do so without hurting anyone again. Maybe he was not meant to have a happy life. Maybe he was not meant to feel peace, only roaring flame. It was in his despair that a mysterious figure appeared to him. The shadowed figure radiated a heat that seemed to match Firebird’s own, instantly catching the young dragon’s attention. A dragon meant for War, the figure told him, embers glowing behind sharp, curved teeth. This clan could not give him the lessons he truly needed, he continued, drawing close to Firebird. True mastery of his power would come only from the source of War itself. Throwing aside the rich red cloak that covered him, the Horseman of War revealed himself, all sharp black and smoldering reds. A fiery spirit to rival even Firebird’s heat. Here, Firebird knew he was staring at his fate. For better or worse, he would leave his clan behind and accept the Horseman’s training. Maybe then he could control himself. Maybe then he could find peace. The question, of course, is whether War intends to train Firebird to be able to temper his abilities…or whether he intends to train him to become the roaring inferno in his dreams...
