You enter the Lost Library, a place covered in cobwebs and murk. Inside you've heard there are wondrous texts on mysterious places, texts long thought to be lost relics. As you are wandering around, running your talons along the bookshelves, quickly browsing the spines, you hear an odd rustling sound coming from somewhere. You continue through the forgotten aisles, until you reach the end. The rustling noise seems to come from a room hidden by a silver curtain.
You hesitate for a moment. Do you really want to enter? What if...there's something scary behind the curtain? But you push past your fear and the curtain. Inside you see a cramped room filled with books and scrolls. Every manner of text litters the floor, which is made of burnt oak and birch. There's a desk in the corner, piled to the ceiling with unopened envelopes and scrap paper. There's a creaky wooden chair by the desk and upon it sits a sleek silver dragon. She's not exactly pretty. Her face is soft and angular, with a light smatter of freckles around her eyes. She wears a dusty hat with a frail feather tucked in the seam, along with a pair of half moon spectacles. Her pale coat is adorned with black patches and swirls. Her shimmering white wings are folded neatly on her back and they are covered in cobwebs. A teensy spider crawls across her hand, which holds open a mysterious black paged book. You move closer to her, but she doesn't notice you. Her eyes are glued to the book. You look over her wing and peer at the pages, but the surprising thing is you don't see any words. You peer at the dragon's face, and you see her pupils flicking back and forth across the page. And yet, as you move closer, she still does not notice you. You reach out towards her, but...your talons phase right through her. You gasp, and the noise echoes through the room. How strange, considering the constricted area doesn't seem like it could produce such a reverberation. But you shrug off the eerie feeling because your curiosity seems to have gotten the better of you. You poke and prod at the dragon's face, watching your hand continually phase through. Suddenly, as you are about to reach through the dragon again, she moves, and your hand touches her scales. She flinches and gasps, then smiles as she notices you. Her thin shadowy eyes sparkle with a friendly aura. "Why, who are you?" she asks with a sweet smile. You tell her your name in a reluctant voice. She grins again, saying, "I assume you don't know of the Phantasmagoria, do you?" You hesitantly shake your head, very confused. "Well," she starts, closing the book and holding it out to you, "Open it yourself. Take it as a gift from the Lost Library." |
