History of Rainbow Cove NOTE: Rainbow Cove/BC history notes are very very very rough, this is more of a springboard for ideas than any kind of comprehensive write-up, and it's certainly not well written. Additionally, the lore surrounding The Brilliant Cascades region, Rainbow Cove, and Santa Solare is heavily inspired by the history of Coney Island and Brighton, and is specifically informed by Defunctland's History of Coney Island. I highly recommend checking it out, if you have the time! The Brilliant Cascade, initially, was a relatively underutilized border land between the Sunbeam Ruins and the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and was named for the various waterfalls dotting the cliffs, alongside the misty rainbows they produce. Light and Water, insofar as flight relations go, weren't particularly hostile towards one another, and as such, the land was fairly bereft aside from a few watchtowers on Light's side. That being said, it wasn't terribly far away from other settlements, such as Brightwood, Mote, and Grimwall, and it wasn't long before some realized the potential of the land and worked to capitalize on it. Elias Goldmoon, the owner of a small mining company in Dragonhome, bought a significant portion of land in the southern Brilliant Cascade, and quickly had an upscale hotel commissioned, as well as a small park and upkeep for the beach. The hotel, The Goldmoon Auberge, is at this point considered one of Santa Solare's most historic sites. Goldmoon, however, did not purchase the land north of Overdeep Waterfall, one of the three waterfalls that stretches from the top of the cliffs to the bottom. (There are additional, smaller waterfalls that let out from underwater streams, and sprout out from the middle of the cliffside.) The northern area of the Brilliant Cascade was soon bought by several people, though the two largest swathes of land were bought up by two different lightning tycoons. Both Marguerite Thundercrack (inheritor of the Thundercrack Railway Inc.) and Nikola Whiplash (founder of the Highland Company), being fierce competitors of Stormseeker Rails, have a long and storied history of buying up land and converting them into desirable destinations in order to drum up business for their train lines. (Though the two companies have long since merged under the umbrella of the Thundercrack Company, at the time they were very separate and certainly didn't get along.) These two both invested in the land (though Marguerite did so first, Nikola was quick to catch on to the idea), and quickly engaged in an unofficial contest to see whose land would be more popular. They competed with one another, both building rails to the Cascade, as well as both vying to construct the longest pier. While they were busy with their metaphorical dock measuring contest, other business owners were busy setting up shop in the area surrounding the lands owned by Marguerite and Nikola, taking advantage of these lines to take a crack at starting their own businesses. This resulted in many unique, creative, and often very strange attempts to draw attention (and coin!!) in their direction. Casinos, bathhouses, restaurants, and cabarets, alongside a variety of novelty shops, opened up. Commissioner Skye DuBleu allowed this, as he owned a construction company (DuBleu Builders Inc.) that built many of these structures, and profited immensely by the creation of these buildings regardless of what they actually were. (Coincidentally, this man is also the Mayor's great-great grandfather.) This, of course, it all taking place while Santa Solare was drawing in some very wealthy clientele, and was doing just fine on its own, thank you very much. This town of thrilling amusements stood in sharp contrast to the other settlement's tranquil scenery and upscale nature, and it came to embody many of the ideas that Goldmoon so despised. He would campaign to restrict the growth of the town to the north of the Cascades (which had since been christened Rainbow Cove), to little avail, but it would set in motion a long-standing rivalry between the cities' politicians and people. Rainbow Cove quickly became known as a melting pot of class and culture, with dragons of all breeds, flights, and economic stopping by for a visit. One of Sornieth's first roller coasters was actually engineered by Nikola, and was known as the Whiplash Railway, and Marguerite was quick to copy the idea with her own Thundercrack Coaster. Attractions abounded, and engineers were brought aboard for the explicit purpose of creating amusements for visitors. Many took inspiration from flight fairs and expositions to try out new and exciting ideas for attractions, from dark rides and ferris wheels. A few decided to take advantage of the natural rivers and falls to create water rides and log flumes, and these quickly became very popular. Both companies initially had separate parks, Pearl Park and Funderland, but both were eventually bought out by the city and became municipal property, united under the title of Rainbow Cove Beach & Boardwalk. Important roles to fill: -Silent film star -Animator -Factory Owner and/or factory worker -Radio actor -Auctioneer/Antique seller -Traveling salesman -Owner of Rumrunner's -Radio DJ Other Notes to incorporate into history: -A cerdae racing track? -Former "zoo" was unable to take proper care of its animals/familiars, and so released its menagerie to Fiona. -A business duo, one on the business side, charismatic and competitive, and one a passionate genius. -One of the heads of business for Santa Solare secretly started working with Rainbow Cove for a piece of that lucrative tourist trap pie. -Rainbow Cove Beach & Boardwalk has a private beach for visitors. Santa Solare also has a private beach. There are also public sections on the coast, however. -It wasn't until long after the death of Nikola and Marguerite that someone from Stormseeker Rails successfully engineered an underwater train, one which is now heavily used by the water flight. This means that those coming in from the Sea of a Thousand Currents are often traveling on the Stormseeker Rails, something which is fairly upsetting to the Thundercrack Company, who still does quite a bit of business in the Cascades-- they're doing their best to engineer their own underwater train, but it's proving to be quite the challenge, and there's been internal talk of "recovering" blueprints from their rival company. -Examples of street names in and around Rainbow Cove include Conch Ave, Starfish Parkway, Main Street, Whiplash Hwy, and Mirrorlight Road. Side notes about Santa Solare: -They've probably got a historic ballroom too lol. Professions opened up by this lore: -Gala/Party planner -Concert musician/conductor -Railway engineer -Familiar breeder/racer -Animal tamer (defunct, probably unethical) -Bathhouse owner -Cabaret owner/Cabaret dancer -Business folx -bar/pub owner -Dairy farmer Other potential, 1920sish rofessions: -Traveling salesman -Factory worker -Factory owner -Banker -Silent movie actor -Silent movie filmmaker -Telephone operator -Lumberman/raftsman/lumberjack/woodchopper/log driver -Switchman/Flagman/Yardman -Baggageman/Freight agent -Drayman/Teamster -Author/Editor/Reporter -Aeronaut/Librarian -Osteopath/Physician -Art deco architect -barber/manicurist -coachman/bell boy -carpenter -electrician/machinist -plumber -marshal/detective -sailor/lighthouse keeper -watchman/security guard/doorkeeper -bookkeeper -stenographer/typewriter -auctioneer -stockbroker -mafia related -bootlegging related -milkman -lamplighter -rat catcher/animal catcher -radio actor -elevator operator -scientists of various kinds (mathematicians, philosophers, etc) -musicians of various kinds Newly Opened Positions (From sold off dragons): -Artist -Musician -Florist -Mechanic -Spelunker -Mycologist -Fortune Teller Prominent locations in Rainbow Cove: -Rainbow Cove Amusement Park -Rainbow Cove Boardwalk -Rainbow Cove Beach, which is technically a subsidiary of the amusement park. -Buster Block's Bowl & Arcade, an arcade/bowling alley with a blacklight theme. Laser tag included! -WFRT-FM, branded as "Fright FM", a horror/supernatural themed radio program that runs in the late night and early morning, and WSUN, "Sun Radio", both air from the same tower, RC Network. -Radajak Casino, a casino/hotel that runs plenty of shows and other forms of entertainment. The in-house food is supposed to be pretty good, too. Heavily subsidized by the city. -Various small businesses, like One Stop Pop Shop (or Colonel's Kernels??), Caruso's Pizza, Genie's Diner/Genie's Lamp, The Chou House (pronounced "chow"), Rumrunner's, and Sunday's Sundaes, which is more of a kiosk than anything, but still. |
