Brilliant. That’s Yngole, Master Wizard of House Aaldir. Everything about him is brilliant, in the truest sense of the word—

He is shining, his hide as pale as snow, his wings mirror-bright. Silver jewelry flashes against his scales; at his side is a sheathed blade. Yngole, however, is no fighter, and he’s likelier to use this sword as a cane. Perhaps to one with as much magic as himself, that’s all it really is.

“There he is! Come now, don’t be shy,” the Coatl says soothingly. Her child, a miniature version of herself, looks back with big, worried eyes.

“But, Mama, he’s so...fancy.”

“That’s what I said at first, too.” The matron chuckles, her eyes sparkling with memory. “Don’t worry, dearest. I promise you’ll have fun. Be nice to your other classmates, OK?”

The Coatl hatchling fluffs out her feathers and determinedly marches over. Yngole turns towards her, his face softening in a warm smile.

He is intelligent, but that’s only to be expected; the position of Master Wizard will never be awarded to a buffoon.

Yngole’s students are all here now. All of them are hatchlings: starry-eyed and open-minded...if he can get them to listen.

Some teachers might be cowed by this fluttery flock of children, but Yngole has been educating others for a long time. Leaves, falling from the branches overhead, turn into fragrant butterflies. They whirl away in a flicker of rainbows, and the children gasp in awe.

Yngole’s specialty is enchantment. Over the next hours, that is what he teaches the children: Quills that write on their own, scrawling nonsense words. Ice sculptures, dancing away from a frozen lake, that melt once they come near a fire. A woven basket coming apart into individual strips of wood, which crawl away like snakes.

“Now, children, remember: Magic is more than an art. It’s—”

Yngole pauses, as if for dramatic effect...but in truth, he’s spied someone else. A dark figure on the edge of the garden, garbed in night-black robes. What little Yngole can see of their face is as bleak and forbidding as a cliffside. The Master Wizard can’t help feeling slightly apprehensive. Who might this somber stranger be?

“A responsibility!” the children chorus, some of them pulling faces. Yngole is not offended; he was a child once too, after all. He remembers his own teacher telling him the same words he now tells his students—

Magic must have a purpose. Nonsense is nonsense, no matter how amusingly those enchanted quills write.

Magic must be carefully guided. Ice sculptures, as delicate as snowflakes—and melting just as swiftly when they draw too close to the fire.

Magic has consequences. And they cannot always be undone. The students hear this now, as they gather up the now-still pieces of the basket. The earlier pattern was too intricate for them to copy, and they look up at Yngole in bafflement. And, eventually, in understanding.

One of them pipes up, “But can’t magic also fix things?”

“That’s a lesson for another time.” Yngole winks, and the hatchlings giggle.

It’s time for the children to head home. They smile at Yngole as they go, but none of them seem to notice the dark figure still standing in the shade. This is not surprising, for Yngole, so brilliant—

He is outstanding, even from a distance. Just like a bright, shining star. “Can I help you?” he asks as the dark-robed figure shuffles forward.

This close, the old Nocturne’s vulture-like visage is not reassuring. But also, this close, Yngole senses his emotions more clearly. Awe, earnestness...perhaps a little shyness?

“Master Yngole? I’m Cambrius, from the Library of Petrus.”

Yngole is familiar with the library, for House Aaldir sometimes has dealings with them on matters of knowledge. He guesses that the Nocturne is here to return or access some of the House’s manuscripts.

Cambrius confirms this, but he has another reason for approaching Yngole: “I was given permission to observe one of your classes. I am an assistant librarian at Petrus, but have been contemplating becoming a teacher. It has been a longtime goal of mine, though one I never seemed suited for. I thought, ‘Why not try again?’ and so I was asked to create lesson plans, to show my clan what I was capable of...”

The words pour out of him, frustrations and dreams swirled together. Briefly, Cambrius shakes his head. “My lesson plans were deemed too monotonous, not stimulating enough. I thought I should give it up again, return to working at the library....

“But observing your class has given me some insight. My students need to see what I am speaking of, to understand what I mean. And also...” This is said with a firm nod. “...to draw their own conclusions.”

Yngole smiles at the old scholar, recognizing some kinship with Cambrius. “Was my class of help to you today?”

“Most assuredly! Practical demonstrations, tailored to the students’ interests and levels...” Cambrius’ face, previously so forbidding, is now alight with introspection. He looks briefly as awed as Yngole’s students were. “Even an old drake like myself has much yet to learn.”

“We all do, Master Cambrius,” Yngole agrees.

Cambrius straightens up. Some of the shyness leaves him, but the earnestness remains. “I would be honored to chat further with you, but I must return to my work. Thank you again, Master Yngole, for your time and understanding.”

“Best of luck, Master Cambrius. I’m sure your students will learn much from you.”

The Nocturne flutters away, and Yngole can’t help chuckling to himself. It appears he had one more student and was actually teaching two different classes all along.

“Even an old drake like myself has much yet to learn....”

Brilliant,
that’s Yngole—beyond mere fanciness and cleverness. A star in a dark night, shining steady and true, always ready to help others find their way.
