The young hatchling sat in the crisp heat of the morning sun, the stems of poppys snapping between his fingertips. A small pile of broken flowers lay beside the hatchling’s wing. Gingerly he lay the blue perennial on the top of the vibrant pile. The child beamed at the completed pile and carefully took it up in his mouth. He half skipped, half flew back to his mothers’s den. Surely the flowers would make his mother smile. Coming upon the den, the hatchling stopped in his tracks, and watched as his only brother, flew away from the den. The tears in his eyes started falling as he walked dejectedly toward his mother, the bouquet left forgotten in the grass. His mother saw him approach, and a smile lit up her face. “Ahhh. Agape! You’re back. Did you bring my flowers?” she asked. Then, realizing the teardrops glistening on his cheeks,” Oh darling,” her voice as smooth as honey,” your brother is going to a better place.” Agape was not convinced. “But, Mommy. Why would he leave without saying goodbye?” The hurt was evident in his voice. “I don’t know darling.” She was lying, she must be lying. “Now, she said, changing the subject,” Where are my flowers?” Agape walked back to the spot in the bushes where he’d watched his brother’s departure, and found the flowers lying on the cool grass, exactly where he had left them, and returned them to his mother. Her reaction was just as he’d come to expect. She took the flowers in her hand, and looked them over. “Thank you, Agape.” She would say. Then she would place them on the windowsill, along with the wilted petals from last weeks flowers. As Agape grew, he knew his turn was coming, the day when mother would place a scroll in his claws and send him away. But, Agape wouldn’t let himself be tossed away like all of his siblings before him. Could his mother really feel nothing for her children? It was selfish of her to think that she was benefiting our lives by sending us to the deities. As much as she tried, she couldn’t hide the small bag of coins that came in after every child she sent away. She was selfish and self serving. And Agape wouldn’t allow himself to follow in her egotistical ways. So, when the day came, he took his chance. He flew away. Away from his mother. Away from the lies she told. Away from it all. Leaving nothing but a bouquet of flowers for her to watch wilt in the sunlight. Starting today, Agape was a new dragon. Today, he would begin to devote himself to others. Today he would dedicate his life to helping others for the good of all dragons everywhere. Today he would true to his name. He would not let his mother define him. Starting today he would be unselfish. Starting today he would be kind. Starting today, he was Agape | ___ |
