There was no going back once it was already done. Redemption was something that he could ever hope to achieve; the acceptance of his peers was nigh impossible to even consider. He knew that before he started this, so why was he only now beginning to doubt? He'd been so hardened to the thought before. Something peaceful for the one person he could claim to truly care about. That had been the only thing he wanted, and he was still glad that he was able to do it for her. Then why was he wondering if it had been the best choice? Was he truly wondering if it had been worth it?
No, he couldn't be. He would do anything for her. It didn't matter who would stand in his way, or what dangers might arise from it. Maybe it was his fear of how she would react to the situation. Would she appreciate it? What if, despite all this work, she didn't acknowledge it simply because of the means? He could always hide that truth from her, but she would find out on her own eventually. Should that happen, she definitely wouldn't be happy. Would he be willing to risk all that? Should he even tell her at all?
He remembered what sparked him to do this. The fear that was sowed into him by that siren's words, how she manipulated every single one of his feelings to her advantage.
"Don't you worry about what would happen to her? It's not every day you come across someone so special," she'd told him. "Every one of the mortals would fight to the death to possess her, and the sweet little thing will just die in the crossfire. That's not mentioning those who would purposely kill her for the same reason. Fate chose for her to be born among the peasants, but destiny has decided to bring her up to marry a prince. She was once hidden away from the world, and now the world has opened their eyes to her. Yet she remains blind to the truths of the world, ignorant in all things..."
He’d fallen for it. While he might’ve known some of it was true, he shouldn’t have let that cloud his judgement. Maybe the reason he was still running was that he didn’t want to face her, even though he went far enough to get everyone off his trail.
Yet he still went to the little cabin. He still took off his heavy coat and shoes; washed the blood off of his hands. He still started boiling the water for tea.
"Will you do it?" She’d seemed too quick for it to be anything good. That should’ve been his wake-up call, but it didn’t even cross his mind at the time.
"I’ll do whatever it takes to make her happy," he had responded blindly. All he could see at that moment was her bright smile, everything about her appearance that rivaled the goddesses in beauty. "It will always be worth it for her."
As he began to put the tea on in the present, he was lost remembering their time together. It was like she could never do wrong. The time they all spent together… he might’ve been the one to end it, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t the best time of his life. Those memories—their memories—now lived only inside him, in a special place where no harm could ever come to them again.
"Ki, I’ve got something to show you!"
"Can’t I finish my tea first..?"
"It might be gone by then! It’s only going to stay there for a couple of minutes, so we have to hurry. I don’t want you to end up missing it."
"Okay, just stop tugging on my arm!"
"Can you see it? They say when Oshye's comet comes, pieces of it break off and land here. Those pieces find their way to specific people and let them see the spirits walking around the area."
"They're just shooting stars, Minne. Shooting stars can't show you spirits... there's no spirits around here anyway."
"Don't lie. You can feel them too, can't you? They're all here with us, watching the stars from where they are... they're keeping their promise. We should just enjoy this time together with them, the one time in the near we'll be closest to them until we both join them in Vriuh's domain..."
