At night sometimes it all comes back to you: You are churning in icy water and your limbs are going numb and feel foreign. A deep confusion seeps through your body to replace the bitter cold. It is winter. It is always winter here. With the grace of soggy cardboard you flop and grope for that leverage of shoreline you need. But when you finally find one the ground is icy and painful. It stings your feet and there is never a refuge. Your clan mates leer at you. Mocking you for being so stupid to fall in at all. There is no relief on their faces. You were worthless to them. You would not bring the clan glory to their God nor great martial success. The only thing that stopped them from throwing you in was the fact you were close enough to death they could finally be done with you and they'd hate to kill the joke. You were always so small and meek. And worse, you were curious like a hatchling. You always wanted to know why but that never mattered around here. It was hard for it to matter when harpies were at your throat and influenza in your system. But, hush. These are only memories now. You are safe. Still, you see enemies on the horizon. You know full and well the threat hordes pose, those of dragon and those of beast, it mattered not. A mirror’s bite hurts just as much as serthis venom. And you can see it in the eyes of passerby and even those who come to the Belfry seeking peace, there’s that glint of an allegiance to deities first and dragonkind second. There’s this unwavering commitment and zeal and it terrifies you. You were never all that religious even when a personal favor from the Arcanist himself severed all connections to your past entirely, made you the Arcane elemental you are now. They were always rulers and means to an end, your heart always lay with other mortals. You blink. And if the hordes don’t come for you there’s always the mercurial nature of the Starfall Isles. The accelerated entropy of this region, it gave you this one glorious chance but it could damn you too. How this fear clutches at your heart and hangs like a transparent veil over your sight. The landscape beneath your feet, beneath the foundations of all your proudest buildings, it all could come undone in an instant. You are certain of this knowledge. Your clan would be far from the first victims of a skybound spire or a floating islet that spontaneously lost its magic. And you know the sounds of it bursting on the open moor would mask any screams even if a soul lasted long enough to process its death. Even worse, you had settled in an impact crater to begin with. You try not to mention this much to your inhabitants. You never knew who had been here before. But there is something to be said of everything, as tenebrous as it all is. There is a celebration to living on this edge and to digging deeper and deeper to that final kernel of truth. That’s why you are an Arcane dragon. Life unfolds around you and has such a spark here. And it’s a beautiful world too. It is transient yet complete in all ways. Both beast and dragon, all immaculate, perfect for their share in the biosphere. The times where you can see this glimmer around you make it all worth it. It’s why you stay and keep going. You know what must happen eventually but you resolve to see it through. There is always more to learn. I am safe, you repeat and you turn to face another day. |

Bio "I will welcome all who would welcome us." Chimes is a compassionate soul bent on learning about this universe and teaching others what she comes across. She is very fond of all life and has practically transformed what was a dragon lair into a sort of zoo with the amount of familiars she eagerly takes under her care. As an idealist, she requires freedom to believe and live life on her own terms in order to be happy. Her former home did not afford such. There, she was frequently chastised and ridiculed for desiring to know the why's of the world. There, she was also made well-aware of stereoptyped "disadvantages" of her breed, that all tundras were scatterbrained and could never set out to carve a better life for themselves let alone lead. Fortunately, she has since proved her ex-clanmates wrong. She has founded her own clan in the Arcane region under her new name "Chimes"*-- a title closely tied with a longtime vision of an enchanted Belfry for which her lair is named and has brought to fruition. Here, she continues to be the clan's respected leader and is closely involved with designing any new buildings. However, she is now assisted by her husband Vernon and other clanmates. She leads the Starlit Belfry clan with the aid of the Council. Chimes' approximate architectural styles fall somewhere between art nouveau and provincial revivalism (storybook). Her allegiance is first and foremost to the Arcanist but she also has strong Light sympathies and after that holds the Gladekeeper in high esteem. These, however, are ultimately political and elemental relations. She prioritizes mortals over the Gods and enemies refer to the Belfry as a den of heathens for this reason. *It should be noted that Chimes did not start life over lightly, she literally cut a deal with a god to be reborn as her current element, Arcane. She's a blithe spirit and an understanding figure but is also one you should not doubt, lest she prove you very wrong. |
