The word used to describe those who are scared of Friday the 13th is "friggatriskaidekaphobics". (An the word for the fear of Friday the 13th is "paraskevidekatriaphobia.")

According to folklorists, there is no written evidence for a "Friday the 13th" superstition before the 20th century. One theory about the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition is that it is a modern combination of two older superstitions: that "hirteen is an unlucky number" and that "Friday is an unlucky day". Many date the "Friday the 13th" superstition to 1907 with the publication of Thomas Lawson's book "Friday, the Thirteenth" which is about a stockbroker who chooses this day to deliberately crash the stock market. In 1908, The New York Times became one of the first media outlets to acknowledge the superstitions of Friday the 13th.

Here's some folklore on what you need to do to avoid bad luck on this day:

1. Do not walk into or cross the path of a black cat.
2. Keep a cricket by your side for good luck.
3. Don’t let a bird fly into your window or into your house.
4. Don’t walk under a ladder
5. Avoid unlucky numbers like 13 (obviously) and 666 (or 4 if you are in China, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam as the pronunciation of "4" is similar to the word ‘death’).
6. Do not open an umbrellas inside your house.
7. Do not break any mirrors.
8. Avoid stepping on cracks/
9. If you knock over your slat shaker, pitch a little salt behind you in order to hit the devil in the eye, to temporarily prevent further mischief.
10. If all else fails, stay in bed until Saturday the 14th arrives.
