Named for the European Eel Anguilla anguilla

The European eel is a critically endangered species. These eels are born in the Sargasso Sea, then migrate into the freshwater habitats where they will spend most of their adult lives, before returning to the sea to breed. Since the 1970s, the numbers of eels reaching Europe is thought to have declined by at least 90%, due to overfishing as a food source for humans, parasites, pollution, barriers to migration such as hydroelectric dams, and changes in ocean currents.
