Evanel did not stir at first from their bed. They felt rising pain in their arms and wings, the crusted Gembond caking them restricting their mobility. They were trying hard to move, not being the lazy type and wanting to get to their work immediately, but the cracking and painful other sounds their condition caused deterred them from getting up, at least for a while. They only felt the pain intensify with every moment, moving slowly towards their case files on the nearby desk.

Evanel flipped through the worn parchment, looking at the cases they were to see today. The second one was of most interest to them, as it was a sweet young Snapper child who had inherited recessive Gembond and could not walk right, causing her pain. Their task was to alleviate the pain around the feet by removing some of the gems that were not plastered to the scales and giving medication to slow the growth of said gems.

The other current cases were more mild and involved dealing with gems around the sides or wings, so Evanel was most interested in getting to the Snapper first. They made posthaste for the clan where said hatchling was living in Dragonhome, bringing their best set of tools to carry out the task. Evanel felt they were moving slower by the day, but somehow managed to get there hours earlier than anticipated.

“Thank goodness you’re here,” came the sad, low voice of a very worried mother. Evanel turned and politely nodded her way. “My poor, sweet child… I can’t have her walk alongside me anymore, she needs to be carried. Please do anything you can to help her!” Evanel paused and thought for a moment. Please do anything you can to help my child… It was just like back then, except that time, no one was there to help them. This time, Evanel swore to themselves the child would not suffer the same fate they did.

“Do you think I’ll be able to walk again?” The child was extremely heavy, even moreso because of the Gembond. Evanel nudged them a little as a nonverbal cue to hold still during treatement. “I’ll do my best, dear,” Evanel reassured her. “Please just try to hold still. This will hurt even more if you move.” With delicate claws, they gently removed some of the excess growth of Gembond around the legs and even extending somewhat into the upper leg. The child did not squirm, but Evanel almost swore they could see some little tears around their eyes. “You are very brave, dear.”

“Now then, your child will need to take this.” Evanel closed the bag into the grip of the mother. “This will slow the growth of the calcified deposits enough so that your daughter will be able to walk well into her adult life.” “Oh, thank you so much! I don’t know how we will ever be able to repay you, but please take this…” The mother, who was already doting on her child, gave Evanel an enormous burlap sack, filled to the brim with treasure. Their companion familiar picked up the heavy bag so that Evanel would not have to carry it, and they made way to their next spot for the week.

Evanel’s next case would involve a young Skydancer. The Gembond was worst around their wings, making them droop unnaturally and too heavy for them to fly. It was likely the Skydancer would never fly again, so they would have to gently break the news to this young dragon. The Winter Sphinx travelling alongside them jingled the heavy treasure bag as they went.

Evanel was quiet and patient with the hyper young Skydancer, who really wanted to fly to Cloudsong one day. His adoptive parents lived in the Zephyr Steppes and could not provide payment for his treatement, so they gave Evanel a few tubes of salve they’d gotten for them. After finishing treatement and alleviating some of the extra gems on the wings, the little Skydancer was quick to thank them. “Do you think I’m gonna be able to fly now?”

Evanel gravely shook their head. “I’m afraid not, little one. I don’t think you’ll be able to fly again.” The young Skydancer stopped bouncing about and his eyes welled with big tears. “That doesn’t mean you won’t ever be able to go to Cloudsong someday, dear. I know that maybe when you’re big, your parents might be able to take you.” They embraced the little patient, who sniffled and wiped his tears. “You really mean Mama and Papa might take me someday…?” They nodded. I remember when I was first told I might not ever fly again…

With two cases completed, their next stop was a clan in the far north of the Scarred Wasteland, where they were to treat an adolescent Guardian. The most afflicted area was around the chest and underbelly, so they would need to roll over on a soft surface for treatment. For a young dragon without parents to seek treatment seemed curious to Evanel, but they were ready to deal with whatever came. The guardian was still young enough to not have a beard, but his Gembond was already starting to weight him down.

“I waited for a while, doctors scare me,” the Guardian said rather flatly. “But whatever you can do, I appreciate it.” Evanel nodded slowly and got to treating him, although he was occasionally reluctant to follow all of their instructions. The Guardian paid with a small handful of gems. “What happened to you, anyhow, if you don’t mind me asking?” Evanel quietly said, curious. The Guardian averted his eyes. “They didn’t want me because I have this.” He gestured to the grey Gembond across his body, now already looking less severe thanks to Evanel. “That’s why I had to ask for this without them.”

Evanel felt all too sympathetic, and thanked their slightly older patient for his patience while heading off to the last destination for the week. The last case was a Tundra newborn close to where Evanel had been born. They weren’t too excited to take the case on as it could bring back some painful memories, but regardless of their own suffering, this was a patient in need of their care, and Evanel did not hesitate.

Making haste for Dragonhome and eventually to the listed location, they were surprised to find that once again, no one was there to bring the hatchling to them. A little more searching around revealed a tragic sight – a lone Tundra in what appeared to be an abandoned nest, crying out for its parents. She was small and sickly – but the Gembond did not seem like it was something genetic like the other cases.

The hatchling had been abandoned because she was bitten.

Evanel felt their insides reel with shock and pain. It was no different than their own childhood – left behind for something they could not control, left alone to contend with an animal they could not beat. They’d treated newborn patients before, but this was a special case, so Evanel took caution to pick up and hold the young dragon carefully. She cried and flailed in their arms, clearly in pain, but Evanel did not shake or falter.

“Shh, it’s going to be okay,” they murmured to the hatchling, gently rocking her to calm her down. It took about fifteen minutes for the hatchling to finally stop crying and flailing. With her calm, Evanel began treatement. Thankfully, the Gembond had not progressed a lot over the span of a couple of days, so this would be an easy case to handle – with the right medication, she would be rather healthy despite the condition existing for life.

They noticed how patient she was with them despite all the pain and sometimes the discomfort the ongoing treatment process gave her, almost as if she trusted Evanel with her life. The pearly white Gembond caused by her bite seemed to shine in the fleeting sun with the idea of hope, which was now being given back to her by Evanel. They dreaded to think how fast the Gembond would have spread had they not arrived sooner.

The methods Evanel used were significantly halting the progression of Gembond, and the hatchling, whom they had named Faith, was making good progress. However, the results were taking longer than expected to show – if this kept up, Evanel would have to put the patients for their next week on hold. They had never done this before, and as they’d spend time with Faith, their own pain was worsening.

It hurt to move their tail and back legs. They could not stay as close as they needed to Faith to keep her warm. The week was starting to end, but Evanel did not want to let the young Tundra go just yet. Something was keeping them attached to her, not a parental instinct, but rather a feeling that Faith needed Evanel with her for her whole life. They weren’t sure what they wanted to do.

The night sky shone above them, shooting stars probably caused by some magical failure at the Starwood Strand making long purple streaks along the sky. Evanel sighed quietly and tried to get up, to leave Faith behind as she napped beside their Winter Sphinx. The Sphinx picked up on the cue and tried to get up, but Faith only hugged closer. Evanel felt something they hadn’t for a while – sadness.

At last, Evanel and the Sphinx made haste for their next destinations for the week, leaving Faith behind. The young Tundra was, by this point, old enough to fend for herself. But when dawn came, Evanel could not bear to think about the heartbreak Faith would feel when she awoke. But there was one thing they could promise themselves – someday, if she was still living there…

… that she could meet her lifesaver once again.
