Hazel has known two mothers all her life, and little more. Her first mother is Demeter, one of Ulalume's Fates, and she is the mother Hazel turns to for guidance, for direction in the world of dragons. After all, Demeter holds a high place among them and understands how their silly little rules tend to work.

Her second mother, though, is Demeter’s Crowned Roc, and that is the mother she turns to for everything else.

As far as Hazel is concerned, Mother Roc is her hatch mother. How else is she to explain her scaly, spindly legs, her feathery plumage? They may differ drastically in color, but at heart? They are one and the same.

Mother Roc saved her, in a way. Deep down, Hazel knows someone else once warmed her egg, shielded her safe during the night. They left, though, not long after she split the shell, and it was Mother Roc who showed her how to spread her wings and fly.

Literally and figuratively, of course.

Gravity and Mother Roc made harsh teachers, far harsher than Demeter could ever bring herself to be, and under their tutelage, Hazel mastered the art of flight. Her hollow bones sang every time she took to the air, and she found herself most at peace soaring over Ulalume with Mother Roc watching still higher above. Nothing compared to that feeling, not even getting to know the dragons her age.

"Other dragons her age," Demeter might correct her ever so gently, but dragons are by definition other. Not for a minute has Hazel considered herself anything but a Roc. An odd one perhaps, but a Roc nonetheless, and never meant to fit in for too long among dragons and their hundreds and hundreds of rules. Ulalume's scholars can show her any text they like, any proof that she is a dragon, but they cannot change the nature of her heart, or the way the wind catches beneath her wings.

Mother Roc says that dragons mean well, even when their words hurt. They like to share truths, but they also forget that truths do not always look the same from every angle. After all, to Demeter, it was true that Nepos was the object of her heart. But to Mother Roc, it was also true that Demeter’s heart did not have enough space for all of Nepos , not with old wounds still binding it small and scared and so very fragile.

Hazel need not fear, though; Demeter has more than enough room in her heart for Hazel, Roc oddities and all. This is a rare truth that does not waver, one that cannot be disputed. In that way, it is like her truth: she is and always shall be more Roc than dragon, more bird than beast. The sky knows it, the wind knows it, she knows it through and through, and Mother Roc's wisdom will always be there to remind her of this when she needs it most. Always.
