Sanrin Crows

Location
  • Sanrin (natively written as 山林 and translating to "mountain forest") is a village located high on the eastern side of Hagetaka-san (禿鷹山), near the outskirts of Hagetaka-mori (禿鷹森), a forest notable for being haunted by spirits and demons.
  • Around the village itself is an invisible magical barrier upheld by the shrine priestess Seizakawa to keep the demons and spirits haunting the forest at bay. They are physically unable to pass through it, though often attempt to break through it anyway, damaging it and making the upkeep of the barrier a full-time job. Normal dragons are able to pass through without issue.
  • Those traveling to and from Sanrin most often take a path leading up and down the eastern side of the mountain. Though long and winding, the path is the safest and easiest (and most scenic, owing to the bamboo forest surrounding it) route one can take.
  • Being in the Icefields, the region around Sanrin (usually simply called Sanrin) is cold. Temperatures are low year round, and snowstorms and blizzards are frequent. Flight throughout the region is usually not advisable.

Physical Attributes
  • Sanrin crows have typical coloring for their species, however bright red or copper runes are much more common than any other color, and are considered the beauty standard. Darker reds are uncommon, and brown, pink, or tarnish are almost unheard of for native crows. Individuals with these colors are almost always foreign-born.
  • As an adaption to the bitter cold of the Icefields, native Sanrin crows have an extra layer of warm, fluffy feathers covering their bodies. While it's usually unnoticeable to the naked eye and these crows retain the sleek appearance of others of their species, they will often "fluff up" in the cold to keep warm. Foreign-born crows are jealous.
  • For reasons unknown to them or to outsiders, Sanrin crows do not follow a traditional biological "binary" of two sexes, and instead are all on a spectrum with four points representing the typical physical attributes of the sex. There is no known exact equivalent to this, but the four sexes can be approximately translated as follows:

    Male - 香魚 ayu
    Female: 鰖 takabe
Both - 爪白 tsumajiro, shortened to 爪 tsuma
    Neither: モリー morii

It is important to note that one's sex has nothing to do with gender, and is only taken into account for medical or courting reasons. Gender is what is considered important in Sanrin, and transgender and nonbinary individuals still exist.
  • Sanrin crows generally have sleek, athletic, toned builds as opposed to some of the more buff crows found in other regions.

Social
  • As opposed to most crow societies, Sanrin crows hold no prejudices against the many variants of their species. In fact, Sanrin was originally established as an escape from the traditional attitude. All variants are considered equal and discrimination is absolutely not tolerated. In fact, true Effluvials are a minority in Sanrin.
  • Traditional Effluvial attitudes regarding other variants are often met with horror, anger, and disgust in Sanrin. This is especially true of discrimination against albinos and magpies, of which their queen and heir belong to.
  • Individual independence is treasured in Sanrin, however all crows in the clan ultimately answer to the clan leader, Amela, and her heir Fubuki, and respect for them and their orders is mandatory.
  • Child-rearing is usually left up to the parents of the hatchlings, and they are responsible for raising their children strong. All hatchlings are trained to their peak before leaving the clan for new horizons. However, if a couple is unable to do so for any reason, the rest of the clan is happy to assist in training.
  • Couples who are unable to produce biological children of their own will often assist in raising other crows' hatchlings. Most notably, Amela and Airtafae, both takabe, raise magpies as their own. In cases like this, the hatchlings are socially considered to be theirs, however the biological parents are still welcome to be involved with them.
  • Upon a hatchling's leave of the clan, they are granted a special feathered headdress. They will generally make up the bulk of the headdress on their own with their own feathers, however with it will include a feather from each parent, as well as a feather from Amela and/or Fubuki if they choose to do so. As such, many crows born in Sanrin wear headdresses with seemingly random single white feathers in their new home.
  • As with all crows, Sanrin crows love to collect red and gold, especially in the form of feathers and jewelry. However, they are also entranced by flowers of all colors, and most will adorn themselves with them.

Language
  • Sanrin crows natively speak the language local to the region, also spoken by other various dragon clans. They usually do not refer to it, but it is usually known as 海氷語 (kaihyou-go), directly translated to "sea ice language".
  • While hatchlings and new arrivals to the clan pick up the spoken language from immersion fairly quickly, the written language is taught as early as possible, simply because of the large amount of characters that need to be learned.
  • In addition, the common draconic tongue is taught, and all Sanrin crows are bilingual in both kaihyou-go and common (referred to in kaihyou-go as 普遍語 (fuhen-go), or "universal language").
  • Names are usually given with special care paid attention to meaning in kaihyou-go, both in sound and writing.
  • While almost all crows born in Sanrin are given names in kaihyou-go, some are given foreign names, and some foreigners will either choose to keep their original name upon taking up residence in Sanrin, or adopt a name more typical for the region.

Spirituality
  • Spirituality is often considered a very personal subject for Sanrin crows, and it is considered taboo to pry into one's personal spiritual beliefs. That said, there are some aspects that are shared across all crows in the clan.
  • Sanrin treasures and respects nature above all. What one takes from the natural world must be repaid, and exploitation of the natural world is unthinkable to them.
  • They will often put special emphasis on the forces of weather and seasons. Seasonal patterns in the broad region are governed by deity-like figures representing the seasons, and so it's only natural for these to hold special importance to them. There are countless superstitions and beliefs concerning these. Individuals with special affinities relating to them are often considered to be blessed in some way.
  • In addition, the stars are heralded as above all, and those with celestial markings (such as Starcrows) are considered to be the closest to the gods. They are often believed to have special powers, though whether that's true or not is variable.
  • Sanrin crows will usually practice their spirituality privately, however those seeking guidance will visit 雲宮 (Kumomiya), the "cloud shrine" to ask guidance of the Starcrow priestess Seizakawa and commune with the gods.
  • Many households will hold relics of spiritual significance to their family, however one relic considered sacred by the entire clan is the 鳴神 (Narukami), a sword traditionally held by the priestess that is said to have divine powers. Only the priestess is allowed to touch the sword, and would be the only one allowed to wield it if it ever became necessary. Because of this, the priestess is always a well-trained swordswoman.

Diplomacy
  • Sanrin often keeps to itself, both by choice and due to geographical difficulties due to their location. Despite this, outsiders who share their viewpoints are welcome to visit.
  • Those who hold traditional discriminatory attitudes, however, are met with a chilly reception and are very closely watched.
  • Sanrin has no dedicated diplomats. Instead, Amela and Fubuki themselves will meet with diplomats of other crow clans. Kirisame is also a frequent sight when traveling to meet other clans, owing to always being by Fubuki's side.
  • When traveling, leading the clan is usually left up to Achro and Sylliosis.

Courting
  • Sanrin generally follows standard crow courting practices. Headdresses (in addition to other feathered trinkets) are made out of one's feathers for their intended mate, and their wings are left uncovered in their presence.
  • As for who can be with who, anything goes. Same sex, same gender, and polyamorous relationships are commonplace and considered just as normal as any other relationship.
  • Once crows have bonded in this way, they have bonded for life and can only be separated by death. This is largely due to how choosy Sanrin crows are with their mates. Divorces and breakups almost never happen simply because they have such high standards for how they want to be treated, and often spend years together as friends before moving on to that next stage.

Roles
  • All crows are allowed to choose a role in the clan that best suits them, however some patterns present themselves.
  • Albinos are usually strategical minds and avoid fighting, especially because of how their marks work in ways that aren't always beneficial.
  • Eboncrows are usually warriors, and are often the largest, strongest, and most aggressive members of the clan.
  • Necromancers are uncommon, but when they do find their way to Sanrin, they often take up roles as researchers, scribes, and teachers.
  • True Effluvials and Jackdaws don't appear to follow any pattern.
  • Of course, as with any pattern, exceptions exist and it is not a set rule.

Recreation
  • Crows hold a variety of hobbies pertaining to their interests, and there aren't any "official" pasttimes, though some are more common than others.
  • Gardening is a common hobby due to Sanrin's love for flowers, and many decorate themselves and their homes with flowers they personally grew.
  • Combat practice is, of course, common play, and many hatchlings can be found roughhousing with each other as a form of training. Older crows often take to training as a way to clear their minds.
  • Sanrin loves lanterns, and they practically have a language for the meanings behind lanterns due to the intense care and intention put behind them. Artistically-inclined crows can spend days making a single lantern, with colors, patterns, and kaihyou-go characters carefully chosen according to common interpretations of them. It's almost a form of poetry, and a single lantern can tell an entire story.
  • Sanrin crows can also often be found researching any topic under the sun, though most commonly nature, languages, and history. Everyone has at least a small library in their home, with a selection of books tailored to their interests.

Combat
  • Sanrin crows generally do not use their contagion as much as other crows do, usually preferring to settle things with weapons or magic instead. Most carry swords, and are well-versed in using them.
  • Instead of relying on sheer strength, they will often rely more on speed, darting in to hit an enemy's weak point and jumping out before they can counterattack.
  • One of the core tenets taught to a Sanrin hatchling in training is calmness. After all, without a sound and calm mind, their enemy's weakness is often missed, and their own weakness easily exploited. Because of this, some remark that fighting against them is "eerie" due to their calm.
  • Mages and healers are very uncommon, however not unheard of. However, such individuals are, for some reason, usually of a personality that tries to avoid combat or conflict.
  • Albino crows try to avoid using their marks when possible. It has been found that the marks of Sanrin albinos are exceedingly dangerous, earning even the strongest victim a quick but excruciating death.
  • A talent of some Sanrin crows is aerial combat atop large avian mounts. A Sanrin crow atop a mount is a deadly force, as both parties are a force to be reckoned with on their own, and even moreso when together.
