“She’s a Nature dragon! Hatched and raised here. She’s known nothing else. Why would she betray us?”

“Don’t be stupid. You’re letting your guard down. She’s not a hatchling anymore, Mosswing. She’s an adult. And she knows more than you seem to think she does.”

Silence, then a sigh. “I’ll talk to her.”

“No, Mosswing. It’s too late to talk to her. We need to cut her down. You know what they say, one rotten apple...”

The voices of Monk’s parents faded as the Spiral sprinted away as silently as possible. She knew eavesdropping was wrong, but it may have saved her life in this case. She would never look back.

If even her parents saw her as nothing but rotten, then that’s what she’d be.
