"He who wishes to fight
Must first count the cost."

- Sun Tzu, The Art of War

"I' ve been keeping my eye on you." The voice came, drifting over the fallen warlord. He would perish, the scarred earth of the wastelands waiting to swallow him whole. He felt a breath ghost across his scales. "Pitiful mortal. I shall show you the true meaning of strength. . . power enough to defy even death itself."

This is the tale of the barghest, Ratha.

Hor-divider-640.png
He came from the desert. From a dry, cracked wasteland of rot and sun-bleached bones. He was king of this place once. . . yet his own people cast him out, forced him into the desert to die of starvation, if the thirst didn't kill him first.

Ratha thought that the well was a mirage when he saw it - a ring of stone protruding from the sand. He crawled towards it, the scales of his underbelly burning on the hot sand, yet he hadn't the strength to hold himself up. Unlike the countless hallucinations that plagued him previously, the well stayed as he dragged himself closer. . . and the last thing he saw were burning eyes staring down at him, his claws reaching out to touch cool stone. Then, there was only darkness.

Ratha awoke beneath the moon, blood searing hot in his veins and the bite of a beast still fresh upon his scales. His form contorted, twisting into that of a hunchbacked monster, yet Ratha didn't care. The curse kept him from death, but his parched throat still burned with an unquenchable thirst and his eyes gleamed with hunger.

There are rumors about him now - a beast that haunts the desert. He stalks the Abiding Boneyard, preying upon travelers who are lost amidst the endless stretches of bone and sand.
