Biography
Though she was born under the Filthy One's element, Slate and Klapa, her closest friend and long-time travelling companion, were raised among the reeds of the Zephyr Steppes. Such a happening can be blamed on a travelling group of rogue harpies, who stole Slate's egg days before it hatched in the hopes of extorting treasure from her parents. Unfortunately for the harpies, they had an extremely poor sense of direction and somehow ended up on the Windswept Plateau instead of the Scarred Wasteland, eventually resulting in them giving up on finding her intended clan and instead bartering her off to a Wind lair. As a result of this mishap, she was raised a Wind dragon, and is most definitely one at heart.
As for Klapa's origins, he wandered too far out of the Blacksand Annex as a pup, eventually crash-landing in the Steppes where a young Slate found him and took him in. She nursed his injured wing back to health, saving him from what could have been a rather gory death at the hands of some other hungry fauna in the Plateau. Ever since, the two have been inseparable, accompanying each other on every little adventure they may go on, always refusing to leave each other's side.
As a hatchling, Slate would gaze up in awe at the twisting, writhing kites of the Cloudsong, craving the day where she would be able to go soaring into the sky herself and finally touch down upon its ornate platforms. Her sole desire was to dance and weave between the walkways and strings, laughing and grinning to herself from the sheer thrill of so gracefully riding the winds, as all Wind dragons should. In her adulthood she moved to the Reedcleft Ascent, in the hopes that simply being closer to the Cloudsong would assist her in finding a way to reach it, and eventually she resorted to the force of the gales in the Aergate; but alas, no wind had the strength to propel her weak mirror wings enough to launch her into the Twisting Crescendo, and on the ground she stayed.
Yet, Slate isn't a quitter. Refusing to give up, she has embarked on her longest journey yet, seeking out anything from in Lanternlea to Cinderslag that may assist in granting her wings further strength and endurance, whether it be feathers crudely attached to her body or suspicious potions sold to her by shady Nocturnes and Serthis merchants. Though it may not be for months, years, or even decades, someday her odyssey will finally end, and she will reach her ultimate destination of the Cloudsong. In the meantime, however, she's staying with the folks in the clan of Kindle to rest her tired wings, and possibly find answers to her plight within the hallowed halls of the Tourmaline Archive.
