Three thousand years ago...

There was a young boy with more power beneath his skin than even the gods could have foretold. He was brave and he was bright, and more than anything, he was loyal. That loyalty would be the death of him, but it would also lead to his rebirth.

The only place for him was in the palace, where he would want for nothing. He was the most powerful sorcerer in the land at an age where most boys were still learning their numbers, with a penchant for spellwork and detailed rune craft that was enhanced by divine might. For a while, he was happy. Some of his best memories were in stone classrooms, surrounded by dusty scrolls, in the front of classes he began to teach rather than attend. Most, however, were in the company of a young god, who did not know or did not care that humans did not deserve him. The sorcerer did not deserve him, but he loved him all the same.

He grew more powerful by the day. That power tore him apart.

____To save his own life, the sorcerer split his soul in half and buried it beneath the desert's eternal sands. He crippled himself to continue living, but also, to remain at the right of his young god. It was an agony made sweeter by worried eyes and gentle hands, and every time his god reached for him, the sorcerer swore oath after oath to protect him.

He had a weapon of unimaginable strength, the most powerful in written history. Their kingdom prospered. Their lives were full. They shared half a lifetime together, half the years promised to mortal men. They were happy.

____His god went to war. Son of Re, Ruler of the Two Lands, beholden to both, it was a war fought for not only their kingdom, but every soul that had ever existed. To keep him safe, the sorcerer unleashed his might. He knew it would cost him his life. It would be worth it. One life was nothing to a kingdom. One love was nothing to a god.

It was not enough.

____Their enemies were too great. The damned stood against them. The sorcerer fell with his squadron at his back, mages he'd trained since he was too short to reach the top shelf of his library. He breathed his last on a bloody battlefield. But there was no place in the Afterlife for a shattered soul. And he would not leave without his god, his best friend, now his king.

He bound the remainder of his soul in service. Together they stood against the greatest of demons, but the only way to victory was a sacrifice of divine blood. The loss of eternal life.

The sorcerer never asked, but he wondered if he'd brought his king any comfort, knowing that they would walk the darkness for eternity.

____In time, he would stop wondering. Darkness was cold, and darkness was infinite. In a world devoid of light and life and warmth, they lost themselves. They lost their memories, their humanity, their hope. They lost each other. But the sorcerer was loyal above all else. He forgot his King's name and his face, the touch of his hand and sweetness of his smile. He never forgot his love.

And it was because of that love that he was ready when the first rays of light filtered through the darkness. It took over three thousand years, surpassed the rise and falls of empires, but when his king reached for him, Mahad took his hand.

Atem walked with him into sunlight.
