A tale of prejudice and hatred

xxxxxxxThe wars amongst the Dragons and Beastclans had reigned terror upon the lands for ages. Nations were obliterated, thousands dead and even more injured. Caught in the hazes of anger and destruction, was Adrienne, a young Maren living amongst the edges of the Sea Of A Thousand Currents.

xxxxxxxHer memories of this chaos stricken time are thin, often nothing more than glimpses and feelings.

xxxxxxxHowever, one event remains vivid in her mind, like it happened yesterday.

xxxxxxxThe sea was calm. Adrienne had been assigned gathering duty. Her colony’s territorial waters had been unusually low on sustenance, so she had ventured just outside colony waters in her search. In the midst of foraging water lilies on the sea’s surface, an unfamiliar sound reached her ears. The young maren froze, listening carefully to the low rumble. Before she had even finished turning around, sharp claws gripped onto her shoulders and slammed her onto a nearby rock.

xxxxxxxGasping at the pain ripping through her body, she stared up at the snarling beast that had her pinned to the rough surface.

xxxxxxxA dragon.

xxxxxxxThe beast had tiny red slits for eyes, a wide snout and very large, very sharp fangs. Adrienne turned her head and squeezed her eyes shut, preparing for a final blow. But instead, only a piercingly loud roar rang in her ears, and dragon breath in her face. Almost as fast as they came, the claws that had pinned her down were gone.

xxxxxxxThe maren opened her eyes, and surely enough, the dragon was flying away, leaving a very confused, very relieved Adrienne on the rock.

xxxxxxxThe confusion became curiosity, and curiosity eventually paved way to obsession.

xxxxxxxNow, with the wars calmed, Adrienne was living amongst the very creatures who had nearly killed her.

xxxxxxxThe encounter with the dragon had spiked her curiosity, as the beast’s actions had been the opposite of everything she had been told of it’s kind. Her colony had preached dragonkind as viscous, bloodthirsty creatures who only lived to kill. Eager to learn what dragons were really like, Adrienne sought to find a spell that would allow her to be among the intimidating creatures safely. Months were spent, trying to get the magic right, until finally the right solution was found.

xxxxxxxA disguise spell, that would morph her appearance into that of a dragon.

xxxxxxxWith the spell complete, she left her colony, and ventured to the other side of the sea.

xxxxxxxAdrienne was a maren no longer.

xxxxxxxNow, she was a dragon.

THE MAREN IN DISGUISE

The little mermaid lifted her glorified eyes towards the sun, and felt them, for the first time, filling with tears. On the ship, in which she had left the prince, there were life and noise; she saw him and his beautiful bride searching for her; sorrowfully they gazed at the pearly foam, as if they knew she had thrown herself into the waves.

Life in Porto

Everybody in Porto is either aware or highly suspicious that Adrienne is a Maren in disguise. She's not a good liar, not good at keeping secrets or well adjusted to dragon life yet. She avoids the Beastclan Diplomats at all costs and spends most of her time being Freya's company, or assisting Luar and the Water Seers on their work.

Having denied all her life and clan, Adrienne stays clear out of dealing with Maren colonies and will go as far as leaving a place if any dragon with a Maren familiar is present. She dreads one day being forced to go back to the Sea and loves her new life among dragonkind.

She works as Freya's bodyguard and pretty much follows her around believing all her antics and trusting everything the pearlcatcher says. Adrienne has come to a point where in her dreams, the dragon who spared her life was, in fact, Freya, when it clearly wasn't so. The Nilfay Witch is also one of the few dragons on clan who cannot see that Adrienne is a mermaid in disguise as a dragon. She's too self-centred to notice. Freya calls her Drie, and she calls Freya 'my dark lady'. It's that type of relationship.
