He could remember that night like the back of his paw. His parents never awoke during the day most times; only at night did they unfurl their wings and taken to the sky. Blotching out the stars with their massive, and mighty appendages. He had only been with them long enough to learn to walk and barely get the hang of flying the night he got separated from them.

His parents had taken he, and his littermate; Constantine. Out on one of their journeys. Homeclan always seemed so peaceful from the lighting of night. The deep voice that rumbled above Corbin as his little wings beat in sync with his brothers. ”We are the nightwatchers of our clan. Most among us know nothing of us save for we exist. You too will one day be nightwatchers like us little ones!”

During the flight Corbin was struck by a shadow creature. The stench of dark magic blocked his senses. The dark purple smoke making it impossible to see. Corbin felt every second of it, he felt the wind rushing up from under him, his wings were no help. His mane wiped around his face as his frantic blue eyes searched for his parents, but as always he couldn’t see them In the dark blanket of night. That petrifying scream that escaped his mother’s lips as he plummeted from the sky; it was the last thing he heard before crashing into the canopy of trees.

When Corbin awoke; the sun was shining bright through the leaves, his body ached and little bruises covered every inch of him. The first thing he noticed, was his heightened senses. As well as his underbelly being a capsule full of black goopy liquid. No longer did striped okapi dance across his paws. That scared him the most. What happened to me? He wondered. ”Calm yourself kid, you’re okay.” a deep voice rumbled through his head. He panicked looking around himself. His eyes connected with a pair of red orbs. A swamphaunt kelpie was standing in front of him. His mother told him about the beasts, that their dark and broody. The creature seemed calm, but an angry look etched on its face. Corbin stared at the kelpie for a moment. His head tilted to the side in curiousity.

The kelpie seemed to glare at him in a way. The same voice rumbled through Corbins head again. ”You just gonna sit there and stare at me. Or are you gonna say something?”. It caused the young hatchling to jump slightly; causing a tidal wave of pain to rush through his back leg and wing. The cry of pain echoed through the wooded clearing. Corbin looked at his back leg. It was swollen and bent at a sharp angle that definitely wasn’t natural. His wing was limp, and the front half angled upwards. Even being so little. He knew both were broken, and he couldn’t fix it.

Corbin turned back to the kelpie, ”So what’s your name and why can I hear you?” The hatchling and kelpie cocked their heads to the side at the same time. A deep chuckle rumbled through Corbins head again. ”For a hatchling you’re smart; anyways I don’t have a name, and I’m bonded to you. Like a familiar.”The voice spoke as the kelpie circled around Corbin. Seeming to inspect his injuries. Corbin wondered what he was going to do about his injuries. He was to young to tend to them himself. Where were his parents? Had they not come to look for him at all? Or had he fallen to far away from home to be found?

So many questions rambled through his head as he just sat there. The kelpie nudged him pulling him from his thoughts. ”Kid, cmon we gotta get out of the open. Can you walk?”. Corbin gave the kelpie a look. Minutes later that’s how Corbin found himself, holding up his broken leg enough, and keeping his broken wing as still as he could to get to a little sheltered area the kelpie found. ”Y’know Imma call you Adelram. That seems like a good name” Corbin smiled happily at the kelpie; to which he got the same deadpan look from the creature with a grumpily mumbled ”Okay kid”.
