History

Though he may not look it now, Karasu was born as part of the Hivemind, a species of dragon-like creatures with a linked consciousness and a single-minded drive to assimilate dragons into their collective hives. As a lowly Drone dragon, Karasu’s mind was fully ingrained with the assimilation mindset, and he was programmed to hone his fighting skills and become a warrior to collect dragons for assimilation. For almost a year straight, Karasu spent nearly every hour of the day training without a care for his physical wellbeing; the only reason he survived was due to his superiors seeing promise in his skills and ensuring his body survived the training. By the time he began to hunt in the world, Karasu was frail in body, little more than skin, bones, and scarred tissue. Still, his physical state couldn’t stop the sheer determination the Drone displayed, and he began to rack up an impressive success list and gain a reputation within the Hive. His record remained unmarred, until he attempted to capture an imperial dragon for assimilation. The imperial was actually a skilled and powerful warrior known as Jet, who soundly defeated Karasu in battle, rendering the skydancer unconscious and injured at the end of it. Fortunately, Jet was merciful and opted to take Karasu back to his clan to heal both his mind and body over time. Karasu, still a Drone of the Hivemind, fought against this attempted treatment fiercely and constantly sought to escape Jet’s watchful gaze, though he felt his mind slowly slipping away from the collective consciousness of the Hivemind. With everyday Karasu spent stuck in Jet’s lair, the grip the Hivemind held on him became weaker and weaker, though Karasu grew more and more panicked. Things eventually came to a head when Karasu managed to escape Jet’s lair and persistent attempts of healing. With his newfound freedom, Karasu immediately returned to the nearest Hivemind lair, fully intending to return to his home long enough to reestablish his connection completely before continuing to pursue Hive assimilation. Though not expecting an open-armed welcome--Drones were incapable of such gestures--he was startled to be greeted with a blockade prohibiting him entrance into the Hive. With an unfamiliar sense of hurt spawned from the fading of the Hivemind doctrines in his thoughts, Karasu demanded an explanation, only to be met with the single line, repeated endlessly for the next half-hour: “A tainted mind serves no purpose in the Hive.” With each repetition, Karasu grew more and more infuriated--the Hive’s grip on his mind slipping with his temper--until at last, Karasu launched himself into an attack. Still weakened from his initial encounter with Jet and severely outnumbered by Drones, Karasu was quickly and viciously beat back, allowing the Drones to close in with the intention to destroy the tainted mind. It was only through the grace of the Shadowbinder that Jet arrived at the crucial moment of the fight, dropping from the sky to defend Karasu with unbridled rage. Once their safety was secured, Jet returned to his clan with Karasu once again injured, where he mended the skydancer’s wounds with seemingly never-ending patience.
Recoveryxxxxxxxxx

For the next few days, Karasu seemed oddly quiet and seemingly content with his life, or at least not attempting any escapes. He was compliant with Jet’s efforts to heal him and even went along with the imperial in his training exercises a few times. Though Karasu couldn’t explain it, he felt as if the Hive’s hold on him had burned up in the rage of the betrayal, and he frankly wasn’t quite sure where he stood in dragonkind now, leaving him quite lost. He took to working with Jet, fighting alongside the warrior and eventually taking his place beside him as an elite fighter of the clan; the skydancer felt he owed Jet his loyalty and life, as the imperial was the only dragon to have ever attempted to save him. As the ranks of the Elite warriors grew, Karasu stuck to the edges of the group, fearing a return to his old habits. He only allowed Jet to remain his close friend, knowing the imperial could be trusted with both his life and his mind, as fragile as they were.

Arrivalxxxxxxxxx

Karasu came upon Wallcreeper Hollows on the dark, windy night of the new moon with no story. He was seeking shelter from the harsh winds of the Windswept Plateau through Singer's Brook, where he stumbled upon the entrance to the Hollows and was confronted by Hollows guards. Karasu gave a weak snarl, then collapsed from his weariness, a result from his long, continuous journey. The guards, puzzled, carried him inside their lair and left him sleeping in an unclaimed den. The following morning Karasu awoke to a young female coatl providing him with breakfast. She watched him curiously, studying his scarred body, then took the emptied platter and left without a word.
Karasu made to pursue the coatl. He wound his way past living and dining caverns along the main tunnel until he came upon two heavy wooden doors. He opened them to emerge into a field of soft grass, marked by a tree on the side. The lair was a cave system carved into the side of the cliff, but the field served as an outdoor common area. A banescale came over to him, introducing himself as Fliquil, the leader of this group. Karasu thought the banescale was too young to be leader of such an elite group of dragons, hardly older than himself, so clearly this was a figure to respect. Fliquil asked him where he had come from, and if he belonged to a clan. Karasu replied that he doesn't recall where he came from, but that he used to belong somewhere. Fliquil considered this, then offered Karasu a place within his clan. Karasu accepted, not having much to lose but also not trustful of these dragons.
