They say water dragons have the ability to see into the future through the changing currents of the ocean, but what if your vision is made of those same pools? Such was the fate of Aquifer. She was blessed with the ability to see the future with the whirling currents of her gaze; though it felt more like a curse. It felt impossible to see the present, her mind was constantly filled with visions of what could be.

Often times she was used as a way to help her clan, her prophetic gaze helped avoid devastation or win wars, but it never seemed to be able to help her. Aquifer wished for nothing more than peace, she wanted to escape from the visions that plagued her every waking moment. She wanted to be like everyone else; she didn’t want to be special.

“Fix me.” Her voice echoed around the empty cavern, an underwater cavern they say can reach the Tidelord. Her voice bounced through the cavern like waves pounding against the shore, like the water that plagued her life. “I don’t want this life, take your prophecies away, give this curse to someone else.” She wasn’t sure if the Tidelord could hear her here, her abilities couldn’t tell her if he heard. They said he was gone but how could a god disappear? He had to be able to hear her, he had to fix her.

No one answered her desperate calls into the dark, not a single soul answered her as she cried into the cave. No god was going to fix her, this was her curse to bear.

Aquifer slinked out of the ocean, pulling herself onto the bank of the plaguelands; her body was weak and her mind was tired. Some part of her hoped this would be her last moments alive, that she would not be able to make it far enough for anyone to find her before her life drained out of her; of course she would not be that lucky. A skydancer, blind yet all seeing, found her there on the coast. The faceted red eyes of this mysterious dragon was the last thing she saw before she blacked out. How fitting for a blind dragon to ‘rescue’ her there when she was trying to escape her visions.

When her eyes opened again she was greeted with the sight of two skydancers, both with deep red fur and matching eyes, though only one had the sectioned eyes of a faceted gaze. “Who are you?” Her voice seemed to reverberate around the small den, making it feel like she was back in that wretched cave.

“I am Mahin, and this is my mate Kahina. You were half dead when we found you, we thought it was best to bring you back to our den to heal.” The blind skydancer spoke; despite her disability however her eyes never left Aquifer, no matter how much she moved. “You seem distressed.”

“You’re blind, and she is deaf, yet you found me on the border and she seems more than capable of following our conversation.”

“Kahina can read lips, and I can see into the future, much like yourself.” Mahin smirked, her lips curling up in an almost menacing manor. “Unlike you, I have never attempted to banish my ability.”

“You are not plagued by the inability to see anything but visions of the future? Can you find rest from the futures you see?”

“No, can any prophet ever really escape what they see? The trick is to use the visions to your advantage, make the visions benefit you and you alone. If someone wishes for their future to be told, give them what they wish at a cost. Nothing is free in this world after all.”

“That is how you keep from going mad? You make yourself a tool for others to use but only when you wish to be used.”

“And it works quite well.”

Aquifer was unsure about the skydancers advice when she left the den, but after she began to follow what she had said, the visions that had caused her so much strife now made her life easier. She assisted dragons in her new clan, but only if they had something to offer her in return. She was not forced to help those who wished for her to speak of her visions, instead she was respected and treated like a normal dragon, not like some beast meant to serve the clan.
