"No, I do not smile... Not that I'm unhappy, I've simply never felt the need. And before you ask! I DO NOT have a crush on Sevares… End of story."

____When I woke up it was night. Over me were a blanket of stars. Meteors shooting across the sky like falling rain. I was laying across a partially melted iceberg. I do not remember how or why I was afloat on this iceberg, adrift at sea. A frigid breeze guided me to a shoreline of Crystal Spines. I was not bothered by the wind, my plumage provides me great insulation. As I attempted to climb onto shore, pain shot through my left shoulder. Looking down, I saw my claws were coated in dry blood. I glanced at my shoulder, it was bleeding profusely, huge gashes stretching down my side. I was bleeding out, I needed help. Light-headed from the loss of blood, I nearly collapsed, but forced myself onward. Stumbling through the Star Wood, making a ruckus, two dragons were drawn to me. “What is your name,” the female asked. My head hurt too bad to think, “I don’t remember…” was all I could muster. “I am Faunitaw,” she stated, “and this is my mate, Emraldrune… Come to our lair. You can rest there as long as you need.”
Once I was settled, given food, and forced to down a healing potion, I perked up and studied my new surroundings. Their lair was sheltered from the rest of the region. Full of crystals in bright hues of purple and pink, perfectly crafted into exotic shapes. As if someone had chiseled them. Along the walls, burrows lead down halls and sleeping quarters. There were so many, too many for two dragons. Either they were expecting hatchings, or, there were other clan members, whom I could not see. “Where am I?” I asked. Faunitaw turned to me, “Starfall Isles… You seem to be from the Southern Icefield, judging by the color of your eyes.” I found my reflection in the pink crystal walls, my eyes where the pale, icy blue only Ice Flight hatchlings possessed. “What part are you from?” Faunitaw continued. “I don’t know… I don’t remember…” I replied. The mated pair gave me worried expressions. Emraldrune spoke, “It would be wise that you wait here until you regain your memory, my dear.”
I was silent, stoic in thought. “Perhaps…” I whispered to myself. “If you like, you can stay. Become a part of our clan? We have more than enough room,” Faunitaw offered. I was not expecting this extent of hospitality. I did not trust them. At the same time, I was still weak, and I did not know if I had any family I could return to. Nor if I was allowed to return. I met Faunitaw’s gaze and replied, “For now, it seems I have little options. If you wish to take me in, I wouldn’t mind.” The two dragons exchanged glances before Faunitaw commented, “Why so unhappy young one?” I stared at her, confused. “You must smile, my dear… All is not lost,” Faunitaw continued. “I don’t smile,” I stated, somehow this statement felt true. I continued, “I’m lost, confused, not unhappy.”
Faunitaw thought to herself for a moment, then bluntly declared, “Given you do not recall your name, I will call you Frigid! A name fitting of your piercing, cold gaze and mirthless visage, but also to honor your place of birth.” I shrugged and sighed, “Call me whatever you wish.”

____I was hunting in the Crystal Pools for big game. On this humid evening, the quarter moon only partly seen, a rolling fog slithered up from the south blanketed the crystal waterside. The neon illumination from the crystals’ bioluminescence, however, provided me an easy trek through the thickening fog. There was a rush of feathers in the distance, like flapping wings. I dropped to a crouch, and, slowly, prowled to the darker, outer perimeter of the pool. Not wanting to frighten away my prey. There was a scent in the heavy air. It carried an almost rancid stench of salt and sulfur. The Crystal Pools were known for the scent of minerals, as much as its calm scenery. Here, however, at this time of day, all kinds of monsters reared their ugly mugs.
Light on my claws, I was close enough to study my prey’s silhouette. It seemed like merely a large bird at first… As I got within pouncing distance, it was shown to be a Winter Wolf. A vague flash of memory came to my. It had come from The Southern Icefield, just like me... My stomach grumbled. Without a second thought, I leaped! The wolf pinned under my claws, screeching in fear.
Using my claws to pin its flailing paws, I shared into its wide eyes of piercing turquoise. Its ragged, matted fur of eldritch, grey, and white. Its heart pounding, seeming ready to burst from its chest. Its short, rapid breaths echoed throughout the Crystal Pool. I held my gaze, “I have to eat like everyone else...” The wolf whimpered. Almost like it understood me. Laying limb under my weight, it had given up fighting. My teeth bared, I heard claws tap against the crystal rocks around the pools. I turned and hissed, only to see Nyceus and his familiar walking up. “It’s me Frigid!” he gasped. I released a sigh. “Sorry,” he continued “I did not mean to frighten you."
"I have nothing to fear," I growled.
"Of course... Is that a Winter Wolf?” his tone more jovial.
“Yes...”
“Rather uncommon to see it here. You've caught a beauty, that is certain,” Nycues placed his paw over mine, “May I persuade you to reconsider?”
“Reconsider?" I asked.
"She's such a rare find! It would be a shame to turn her into a meal..."
"I’m starving!”
Nyceus backed away, “I’ll make it up to you, immediately! I promise.”
I rolled my eyes. My stomach groaned. Then, there was Nyceus, his eyes penetrating the depths of my soul. Guilt punched my chest, making my heart wince. “You better…” I growled, releasing the beast from my talons. Nyceus collected her in the safety of his arms. Stroking her fur like a house cat. “She’ll be in shock for a bit, but I'll tend to her once we’re back ,” he explained.
"You intend on making her our pet?" I huffed.
"She would be an excellent hunting partner! Wolves are skilled hunters, and very social! She'd make a great familiar."
I tossed my eyes, but kept my reservations to myself. "Your naturalist side is taking over again," I grumbled.
"Oh! How you warm my heart, Frigid. She'll be loyal as she is deadly," Nyceus beamed. "Oh, I nearly forgot... This way, I’ll show you to the Onyx Cobra nests I stumble on.”
“Better hurry, or you’ll be added to the menu,” I followed in toe.
Nycues and I walked on in silence a mere several steps before he added, “What name do you want to give her?”
I sighed irritably, but gave his question real thought. She was as grey as the mists shrouding the pools.
I replied, "Grey."
