Biography

"What would you do for them?"

Solomon looked from the dragon who spoke to the few dragons who just entered the inn. They were visibly worn to the bone, covered in filth, ribs showing, and they could barely walk without stumbling. Solomon narrowed his eyes.

"Nothing. It is not my responsibility to play nanny." He said, turning his gaze to E'ijah. "I'm a scout and a warrior, my talents are best suited out in the unknown lands."

"They'll be your recruits to train."

Solomon narrowed his eyes, claws curling around his mug of cool, spring water. A claw pierced through the wooden cup and a small stream of water dribbled to the table, and the spiral quickly downed the entire mug in one go.

"Please tell me you're joking." He spat from between grit teeth. "I work alone, I always have. I don't need some sloppy, inexperienced dragons tagging along and getting all of us killed."

E'ijah raised an eyebrow. A simple gesture but Solomon recognized it as a warning sign.

"I never joke. We need more scouts capable of surviving out there and you're the best we've got. This is not open for discussion. Get to know them. In a week you take them out into the unknown lands and start their training."

It took everything in Solomon not to lose his temper. He'd been working with the recruits for three weeks now and they were driving him insane. Oh, they obeyed every order, they listened carefully and were willing to learn, and they were eager enough alright...but Solomon was used to working alone. He liked working alone.

The unknown lands were dangerous enough to survive in and navigate without having to keep an eye on his own back as well as the backs of the others. Why couldn't E'ijah take on this task instead of him? The leader had more patience and was more willing to teach than he was.

He was tense but the sight of the familiar inn drew a sigh from Solomon's lips. He thought the day to return to rest and recover from their trip would never come. It wasn't the end of their journey, not by a long shot, but it was too risky to stay out there for too long at a time, especially with green dragons who didn't know how to survive.

"Going well?" E'ijah asked, a small smile on their lips.

"This is torture." Solomon muttered as he watched the others gratefully rest in front of the fire. They were out of earshot so he wasn't worried about them catching their conversation. "I swear, they are completely oblivious of the danger out there."

"That's why you're training them. We need this, Solomon. You know every time a scout dies, that sets everything back by months."

Solomon sighed. He knew. The unknown lands stretched for thousands of miles and was home to hundreds of beasts and monsters that would love to feast on blood. It held poisonous water sources as well as fresh, quicksand, rapidly changing weather that could easily kill if one didn't heed the warning signs.

The havens that dragons lived in were small and was a struggle to survive in. The threat of outside attacks was constant, and making sure the food supplies stayed consistent and plentiful was the biggest challenge. Scouts jobs were to map out and get familiar with the surrounding areas in order for the havens to expand and grow.

"What would you do for them?"

Solomon looked at his group of recruits, a neutral expression on his face. They laughed among themselves and despite being thin and still adjusting to the vigorous pace of the unknown lands, they were handling themselves well. Despite their flaws.

"Make sure they stay alive." He replied after a few moments of thinking. "Help them keep themselves alive."

Months passed and Solomon couldn't deny the fact that he was quickly growing attached to his recruits. Though by now they were more than recruits. Every time one of them passed a test, or detected a danger that Solomon waited on announcing, he felt a spark of pride fill his chest.

They were getting stronger. Faster. The trainees worked well together and watched each others backs with a determination that went beyond friendship and Solomon wondered what exactly they had been through to make them so close.

"Stop. Listen." Solomon barked, growing still and lifting his head to tilt his ears in one direction and then the other. In his peripheral vision, he could see the trainees do the same. "Do you hear that? The wind?"

"It sounds heavy." One said.

"Storm is coming." Another added.

Solomon was about to confirm their comments when something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. The dense undergrowth shifted and before he could think, Solomon jumped toward it as a beast came barreling out.

He collided with it before it could ambush one of the others, and after a brief struggle it lay dead in a pool of its own blood.

Then the rain came, thick and heavy and feeling like hundreds of small needles.

"Find shelter!" Solomon shouted over the noise of the wind and constant thunder.

Refuge was found in the form of an abandoned den of some monster, barely big enough for them all. After a brief wait, the storm ended as quickly as it started.

Solomon was thrust to the ground, hissing as sharp claws dug into his side. Blood covered his scales and his body was a canvas of pain that grew at every movement, but he still did not give up.

There were dragons living in the unknown lands, he and his team were shocked to discover, and they were not friendly. They ambushed Solomon and his crew, no longer recruits after two years under his care.

"Stay down." A gravelly voice warned as a large, scarred head bared its teeth close to Solomon's throat.

In return, Solomon spat in his attackers face. He was rewarded with a claw dragging across his hide, opening a gash. By gritting his teeth he bit back the scream that bubbled up in the back of his throat.

His eyes shifted to his team, his friends. They were in a similar position, with claws against their throats to keep them still. One wrong move and they were dead.

"Tell me, softblood."

A fierce pain in his side drew Solomon's attention back to his attacker.

"What would you do for them?"

Solomon's face softened as he looked back upon his team. He longed to tell them that it would be okay, that they would all make it out, but all he could do was try and portray that without speaking. And despite the fear in their eyes, they held firm and didn't give in, even now.

He looked up at his captor, eyes dark and full of a fierce determination. "Anything."
