Biography

Variant of Ayanna. Possibly means "flower" in Amharic; in 'The Book of African Names' (1991), linguist Molefi Asante lists Ayanna as an Eastern African feminine name meaning "this is a beautiful flower". It has been used among African-Americans and Jamaicans for at least 50 years. In the United States the name was given a boost after Richard Claxton Gregory, the African-American comedian and civil rights activist, bestowed it on his daughter who was born in 1971.
