Biography
Relayer
The Alchemist When he had first arrived in Laccolith Keep, Relayer had only a cramped, dusty room at the top of an unused tower in which to work and live. Since then, largely by asking for forgiveness rather than permission, he had expanded the meager space into a laboratory tower worthy of the Gneissics. Better, even; the mages hold a great deal of power, but there are some things only royal money can buy. Triumvirat hesitated for only a moment before entering the alchemist's tower. She was by no means afraid of him, nor did she feel any desire to respect his personal space; it was her castle that he lived in, after all. Instead, it was a rare moment of self-awareness that gave her pause. She had received enough bad news in one day, and there was a very good chance this conversation would be the final straw for her temper. Her court alchemist had a way of getting under her scales. Nevertheless, she opened the door. A circular room with a table in the center, covered in notes and tomes of all sorts, walls lined with shelves chock full of jars containing alchemical reagents ranging from plant clippings to animal parts submerged in liquid. The alchemist, however, was nowhere to be seen. "Relayer? Are you in here?" She called out. "I would speak with you." There was a loud crash from the room upstairs, and Triumvirat had her answer. "Coming, your...Highness," A slippery voice replied. The Bogsneak came slithering down the stairs moments later. He had once been a Spiral, and it showed in his gait; he snaked about as though his body was still long and thin. Triumvirat found it more than a little unsettling to watch him move. "Forgive me, your Highness, but I wasn't expecting...company," Grabbing the edge of the table, he pulled himself up so he was resting his front legs on the table's surface. "Is there something...urgent? Something that could not...wait...until you held court?" The Queen inhaled slowly, making the conscious decision not to lose her temper already. "I would prefer this conversation stay between us, Relayer," She replied. "We are alone, yes?" Relayer nodded enthusiastically. "Good. The Pyroclasts are making moves. My own daughter has left to join them, and I find my list of allies growing remarkably thin. The Gneissics are bound to remain neutral, as they always have..." Triumvirat narrowed her eyes, studying the alchemist's expression. "Should it come to that, will you be returning to the Temper?" Relayer drummed his claws on the table thoughtfully. "Well, it has been a long time since I'd been back. It would be nice to see my...colleagues again...compare notes..." Triumvirat snorted, small flames flickering out of her nostrils. "I am asking you if we can count on your allegiance in a time of war," She snapped. "If you returned to the Temper, I would take it as your official resignation from my court." Relayer flicked his long, forked tongue out thoughtfully, then pushed himself off the table and back down to the floor, slinking around to face the Queen. He bowed deeply, but then rose to eye level with her. "My Queen, should such an unfortunate turn of events occur, rest assured I will...happily remain here," He grinned. "Assuming, of course, that I can continue my...experiments."
