Biography

Fr3z5pa.png Staghorn Coral Ghostly Aura
"They were evil things; mountains of madness
whose farther slopes looked out over some
accursed ultimate abyss. That seething, half-
luminous cloud-background suggested a
vague and unsettling ethereal beyondness."
Tekeli-li, once a guardian of the Elder Things and the ancient frozen fortresses where they dwelt. The Old Ones, star-headed aliens who colonized Sornieth millions of years before the dawn of dragon-kind, created a race of servile beings for labour, the shoggoths. Sentient masses of self-shaping gelatinous flesh, a shoggoth was capable of molding itself into whatever organs or shapes it found necessary for its current task; however, in its usual state it tended to sport a roiling profusion of eyes, mouths, and tentacle-like protrusions.

Although bred to be mindless, the shoggoths mutated through the aeons and slowly developed consciousness, and even became periodically rebellious. Eventually, they overthrew the Elder Things and killed them, taking over their cities. But the beasts could not withstand the violent elemental changes that the young planet continuously went through, and most succumbed to the devastating Ice Ages that ravaged the world over millennia.

Though rare, some shoggoths did manage to survive into the modern era, most notably in the deepest parts of the oceans and at the very heart of the Southern Icefield. It is there in a remote palisade of the Cloudscrape Crags that Tekeli-li remains in the ruins of an ancient citadel, hidden deep in passageways that go far into the frozen cliffs. For centuries Tekeli-li has taken a coatl form to protect against intrepid explorers and hunters who might stumble upon his lair, and though his true nature has never been revealed to those who lived to tell the tale, there is an air of dread and malice about the area, and it is known locally as the 'Mountains of Madness'.

Ruling over the Mountains of Madness alone, Tekeli-li stalks the highest of the frostbitten peaks, his eerie call carried on the frozen breeze, hoping to reach another of his kind. A haunting, melodious piping, the only word the shoggoth can say is his own name; a phrase from the archaic language of the Elder Things which the monstrous beast once learned to mimic. Anyone unfortunate enough to hear the wail of "Tekeli-liiii! Tekeli-liiii!" will realise, as their fur stands on end, that they have ventured too close to something otherworldly and terrifying, and never quite recover from the experience.

"Formless protoplasm able to mock and reflect all forms and organs and processes - viscous agglutinations of bubbling cells - rubbery fifteen-foot spheroids infinitely plastic and ductile - slaves of suggestion, builders of cities - more and more sullen, more and more intelligent, more and more amphibious, more and more imitative! Great God! What madness made even those blasphemous Old Ones willing to use and carve such things?"
