______ You will find her in the clan’s garden just a minute before the sun begins its ascent in the lily-pink sky. The early, golden light glitters on purple fur and filters through translucent wings, reflecting off tiny drops of morning dew on delicate flower petals as she passes by.

Here, among the fragrant flora that remind her of her old home, Dawn closes her eyes and breathes.



______ There are those who would mistake her cheerfulness for innocence, her optimism for naivety. They are rarely correct; Dawn’s eyes may still shimmer a radiant emerald and hold youth and hope and love in them, but she has become used to the harsh ways of this cruel world.And still, she chooses to believe that there is good in the dragons of wide, wonderful Sorineth. This clan is testament to that belief, filled with dragons who at least share a semblance of the truth she holds steadfast in her heart.

When she opens her eyes again, the clan’s members have begun their morning routine. Muffled chatter mingles with the scent of freshly baked bread, drifting over from the mess hall. Of its own bidding, her stomach growls.

Dawn casts her watchful gaze one last time at the lush garden around her, warmth stirring in her chest.
