CLOTTED
This subspecies is comprised of evolved thrombophilics - that is to say, they live in an endless state of hypercoagulability, which causes clots to form at random within the bloodstream. Such a condition would be fatal under normal circumstances. The emergence of the Clotted was simultaneous throughout the land. Upon investigation, it was found to have stemmed from a recessive trait, though what triggered it is still unknown. In the beginning, many a dragon perished. Those presumed dead or dying were brought to the Wyrmwound for disposal. As a new affliction being introduced into the plaguelands in en masse, however, this practice had quite a different result. Instead of weakening as they neared their time by the Wyrm, they began to change. Their bodies gained the ability to purge the obstructions. The rejected formations would now collect atop the skin, which grew translucent beneath them. Clotteds now live in a cyclic coagulative state.

Clotteds primarily exist within the plaguelands. The condition is now rarely found in other territories, but when it arises, the size of their surface clots is markedly smaller. A trait common of any Clotted, however, is that of constricted and painful movements as a result of their masses, which also increase as they age. The mutated condition is passed along from parent to egg. As the hatchlings mature, so do the corresponding traits that handle clot manifestation. Should a Clotted be born beyond plague territory and make it to the Wyrm, it stands a chance of experiencing the changes which saved the first of its kind.
CYCLIC COAGULATION

Clotteds have unusually elastic vessels that were a necessary development for survival. When the body recognizes an obstruction, veins and arteries will stretch and flex to accommodate it without completely restricting the flow of blood, until they reach a point where they can be deposited, similar to eroded soil on a river bank. These deposit points tend to be superficial. If a clot forms within a major pathway it is redirected by projections which line the vessels until it reaches a desired location. From here, microvilli usher the clot through smaller and smaller networks until it breaches the surface of the skin. Due to the size of the deposits this often causes damage to veins and epithelial layers. The resulting blood increases the original clot volume on the skin. Once free of the body the collections are keratinous and become hardened, similar to the horns and nails.
