"Come back here, punk!" The dragon chasing me hissed, swiping at me. I shivered as his claws skimmed my furry tail, only the length of a clawtip away from drawing blood. His hot breath hung on my wings. I quickly scanned the area as I raced, constantly looking for an escape route. Finally, I found one. A scrawny rat squirmed into a hole that gaped under a building, a hole that was a squeeze for a dragonet but an impossibility for a dragon as hefty as the Snapper chasing him. I stopped suddenly and whirled around, digging my claws into the cracks on the pavement and tensing my muscles before taking off in a running leap, diving straight for the joke and flapping my wings once to aid me. I grunted as I slid in, the cold and hard rock driving the breath out of me. I wasn't fully safe, though. My tail and wingtips was still stuck out in the open. I wriggled and sucked in a breath, flattening my belly and hooked my claws on the other side of the tunnel, yanking with all my mind. "I've got you now, you vagabond!" I heard the Snapper say victoriously as he came closer. I forced all energy into my hardened muscles and heaved, pulling until I heard a satisfying POP and I popped out of the hole, rolling out in a ball until I slammed into a wall. I slowly and painfully uncurled myself, stretching my sore wings gently. I carefully tugged out the goods that I had 'borrowed' in my claws. Of course, it wasn't stealing. Stealing meant taking something without warrant and providing nothing in return. By getting these now-bruised apples, I had given the Snapper a good work out and reminded him to pay more attention in the future. I was also going to put it to good use. I planned on paying him back properly later, somehow. Maybe I would find some money somewhere. Just then, the low screeching sound of rats filled my ears. I turned around and found that, to my horror, I had stumbled into a rat's nest. The rodents' eyes gleamed wickedly as they stalked closer and closer to me, hemming me in. I could handle ten rats. I couldn't fight off uncountable little villains with ruthless and sharp teeth and claws. Even though it would be harder to hurt me through my thick fur, they could likely overpower me. Frantic thoughts raced through my mind just as all of a sudden the rats whipped around and scampered off. I gave a sigh of relief until I saw what had made them run. I was facing several dragonets my own age. One was a fae who was a light brown and had darker brown speckles, and he cowered away slightly. There was a mirror that had tan skin with pink circuit lines racing through it. Her eyes were sharp and narrow and she hissed as she looked at me. The other was a blue guardian with jaguar-like spots across his skin, and he grinned at me with broken teeth. I clutched the soiled sack close to my chest as the Mirror aprroached and the Guardian started circling me. "What do we have here?" He hissed. "This is our place." The mirror snapped, shooting me a venomous look as she curled her claws threateningly. "Go get your own." I swallowed and forced what I hoped was a disarming smile. "I'm just passing through." I sighed and looked at the bag in my talons. I was hungry and I'd fought hard for it, but they were hungry too, and I was in their land. I forced out the next words carefully.
