PAN 'S DEMIC

Pan was born right at the outset of civilization’s collapse. He had glowing eyes and blistering skin that were feared to be due to exposure to toxic elements in the environment. The life-bearing area Pan was born into began to sour and the land became inhospitable. During the event known to some as the ‘pox-eclipse’ Pan and his mother took refuge in an abandoned mine. The new frontier became lawless as resources became more and more scarce. Tribes sprang up, some factions evolved into vicious marauders as they fought for possession of the few and precious resources. Pan and his mother were attacked and his mother was dragged away. Pan survived by eating rodents and drinking water from the sea bed. It is unknown how long he wandered alone in the wasteland. Eventually, he found the Citadel where he rose to position of Guardian of the Bone Orchard. The remains of the dead needed to be guarded as they had become a commodity used to fertilize the sour soil. Pan was able to ward off grave robbers simply by lifting his eyelids. Looking into the dark openness of the bone orchard and meeting a pair of glowing eyes would send any would be robber running.

You'll never be alone... —

Firelight flickered from the wet cave walls. Pan was in a dark place and the thing staring at him wore a buffalo's head. It was rank and furious with huge wet eyes.
"Where am I?" Pan asked.
"You are still here, in the Bone Orchard over which you are Guardian." said the buffalo-headed creature. His eyes were liquid black marbles. His voice rumbled. His breath rattled in his chest. And he smelled like a wet cow. Pan felt at home even in such a strange place. But he was still growing used to the visitors that always seemed to arrive in the night.

Just outside of the dark shadows of the cave. There, under the moonlight, was an orchard of skeletal white trees, their branches ending in bony hands, their roots going deep down into the graves.

He saw an old man in the distance striding toward him: he wore a gray cloak, ragged at the bottom as if he had done a lot of traveling. He wore a broad-brimmed blue hat, with a seagull feather tucked into the band at a jaunty angle. He looked like a long-retired gunfighter, thought Pan. The old man was ridiculously tall and lanky. He nodded curtly to Pan. He had a piratical black eye-patch and a jutting white beard. The man scratched the side of his nose. His gull-feather bobbed.

“Are you ready to go back there?” asked the man, who when Pan saw up close, appeared older than he imagined possible. His skin was lined with wrinkles and cracks, like cracks in granite. “Back to the mine where you were safe with your mother?” the old man clarified.
“Nothing to go back for,” Pan answered, and as he said it he knew it was a lie. “Things wait for you there,” said the old man. “But they wait until you return.”

A white butterfly flew crookedly past them. Pan said nothing. He was used to this appearance and to the sudden and frightful appearance of psychopomps and gods and lords of gallows. Pan didn’t wait to see the old man and the white butterfly leave. He was tired now and wanted to go rest and get warm in his cave. He hoped he would find it unoccupied...
