eydís
origin. ancient scandinavian, icelandic. "good fortune, island, goddess." ────── ❂ ────── Beloved? Eydis stumbled through the battlefield. The dust had settled, and so had most of the troops, who were already flocking home to sighs of relief and home-cooked meals. Surely, of these stragglers, Eydis would find her beloved. But solace did not come. And soon Eydis was at the shore, empty stomach, bated breath. She wanted to collapse from exhaustion, to fall and fall and fall into her beloved’s arms and let her worries slip past her like sand in a glass. But only fools cling to what cannot be. Eydis had searched everywhere. Her charge was gone. With no worth in turning back, Eydis continued into the shallows ahead of her, letting the sea embrace her. She plunged deeper and deeper, relishing in the current coursing through her crest and fins. She hadn’t been this happy in days, and was heartened to forget her despair, if only for a moment. But did bliss have to be so fleeting? Eydis met the ocean floor, sand billowing neath her body as she nestled in the sediment. It wouldn’t hurt to stay here, she hummed. I want to rest forever.

Eydis blinked. She had slept, but for how long? Her bleary eyes adjusted to the meager bioluminescence surrounding, and faint recollections taunted her. The grief that once tore Eydis had dulled; these aches were past her. Eydis felt ready to stretch, to step, to rise. To rise and rise through sea and sky, and conquer what once shackled her. Eydis was about to stir when suddenly, a voice chimed through the water. “Look, another deposit! I can already spot some gnarly emeralds!” A spiral zipped past her vision, and Eydis could hear the chatter of other dragons trailing behind. They were miners, obvious enough, but another conclusion- and pickaxe -struck at her. Eydis harbored these crystals. She closed her eyes and focused. As days, no, weeks passed, swathes of excavators swapped everything from in-party gossip to world events, blessing Eydis with knowledge of the monolith she had become. Magically replenishing mines, mother of ecosystems, and an enchanting Amsterwick, a sweeping society nestled where her body rose past the sea. Eydis came to love this Amsterwick. She was one with its people, and it comforted her. So long as this town shone, she decided, Eydis would lay, serving with devotion, till death do they part. My beautiful charge, we meet again. | ___ |
