Evys shuffled her talons nervously as she watched the pair of dragons approaching from the South. Far off in the distance behind them was the Blight Sanctum, where they’d come from.
She couldn’t help pacing restlessly as the two dove down to land beside her. The first to land was a grey and red Pearlcatcher, adorned in various steampunk bits and bobs. The second was a massive gold and green Guardian, seemingly made of stars. The sheer size difference between the two nearly made Evys laugh, as the Guardian was almost 4x the size of her companion. “Bloodstone, Saiph! It’s good to see you both!” Evys greeted them excitedly, even as Bloodstone seemed to be regarding her with disdain. “Evys, it’s been far too long,” Saiph responded smoothly, settling down onto the muddy ground with a content sigh. “This couldn’t have been discussed in a letter, perhaps?” The Wildclaw shook her head, “no, it couldn’t. Ever since Casper arrived at the sanctum, I don’t think letters have been reaching you.” Saiph’s expression quirked with surprise for a moment. “Surely you don’t think she’d eat the sanctum’s mail, do you?” She asked in amusement. Before Evys could respond, Bloodstone jumped in, “I’ve seen her do it. Aethers are worse than the moths they so shamelessly copy,” she snarked grumpily, lashing her tail. “Cut to the chase, Evys. What could you possibly want from us that warrants such a trip?” Evys’s eyes narrowed dangerously as she snarled, “don’t get all snappy at me.” Bloodstone rolled her eyes, “so temperamental and defensive. Hurt your pride did I?” She snapped. “Just get this over with so we can leave. I have nothing to offer you at this time.” Bloodstone was testing her patience, walking a thin line between insulting her and instigating a duel. The Wildclaw took a deep breath, as she felt Saiph’s eyes on her. There was nothing to be done about it. Not now anyway. “I just wanted to know if there’s been any progress on–” Evys began, before she was cut off. “No. We’ll write to you when there’s an update. Now stop wasting our time if you want results damnit!” Bloodstone shouted, before taking off into the sky. She flicked the mud off her talons, directly at Evys, before beginning the flight back towards the Blight Sanctum. Evys huffed and shook off the mud, glaring after the temperamental Pearlcatcher. “She’s lucky I don’t pummel her for being so rude all the time!” Saiph snorted in amusement before rising from her spot on the ground. “You two always bicker like this, you’d think you’d be used to it by now,” she mused. Evys didn’t respond, still glaring after the Pearlcatcher for a few moments longer. Finally she sighed and turned her attention to Saiph. “We used to get along fine, it’s just… It’s like she can’t believe I’m not…” She trailed off, her gaze cast downwards. Saiph shook her head, placing a talon under Evys’s jaw to raise her head. “She’s worried about you, Evys.” When Evys scoffed at that, Saiph furrowed her eyebrows. “She is. Every night she’s hard at work looking into it. She wants to help. She just doesn’t want you to know she cares.” Evys found that hard to believe, but reluctantly stepped away from Saiph. “Would be nice if she cared enough to tell me herself.” She shook her head as if to clear her frustration, and looked up at the Guardian towering over her. “I wish you both safe travels on your return.” |
