A lantern dangling off one of Lichen's antlers lights the cave in a dim orange glow. A trail of black footsteps made by some sort of Shade creature are faintly visible on the ceiling, and Lichen is following them through the cave. The only sound heard is Lichen humming a simple song to themself.
The lantern's flame shivers once, twice, and then goes out- only to relight about a minute later. Lichen is unfazed, simply waiting for their only friend to show up in person. Lichen can't see her, but he feels the cold dragon appear beside him, and that's enough. "What are we doing today, dear?" Tenor asks Lichen in a hushed tone. "Footsteps," Lichen says simply, gesturing towards the ceiling. Tenor shifts beside Lichen, presumably looking at the ceiling with him. "Oh, I see," she says. "Are you sure this is a good use of time? You know it gets awfully tight through this cave, yes?" "I know," Lichen says, "but it's a dead end, if I wait long enough it'll have to come out." Tenor hums thoughtfully. "I'll leave you to it, then," she says, "wouldn't want to alert your mark." "Thanks," Lichen says as Tenor's presence disappears. They swing their head around to glance behind them, seeing nothing but two trails of black footsteps. One on the ceiling, and one on the cave's floor. --- Lichen's been hunting Shade creatures for millennia as a Gaoler of the Seeker order. Over time, her search has lead her to a system of strange caves carved out by storms and rivers long ago underneath the Storming Plains. They've found and destroyed several patches of Shade here, accompanied by an Imperial named Tenor who'd been living underneath the Storming Plains for many years before Lichen showed up. Over time, though, Tenor has gotten increasingly scattered and talks to him less and less. Lichen hasn't really been paying attention, though... Lichen's memory of the world above is shaky at best, having been in the cave systems for so long. Her recollection of what a Seeker is, what a Gaoler is gets fainter every day. The only thing they recall most of the time is that they are looking for the Shade. |
