"I exist with a purpose and voice. Don't you?"

______ Starwood doesn't recall his name from when he hatched. All he remembers is his life in the Starwood Strand and the other dragons who flit through the trees as easily as himself. Some remember their names while others don't, but it's so rare for a name to be spoken anyway. Names have power and all that.

Besides. They are home here, Guardians of the Starwood Strand, and too busy defending the beauty from careless visitors.

For as long as he can remember, protecting the flowers and trees that could bring the infinite universe closer to home was his purpose, but he never fully understood why. Starwood was born here, but was that reason enough to bind himself to the woods for eternity? A visitor didn't believe that to be reason enough.

"I was born on the Focal Point, but I didn't stay long," she reasoned in that strange way of hers. "But when I looked to the sky and watched the meteors fall, I knew staying wasn't my destiny. I had to see more, like the aliens who rode those meteors."

Starwood didn't understand what she was trying to say. She still lived on the Focal Point, albeit closer to the Observatory, so wasn't she still serving her purpose? Long after she had left by the insistence of her co-founder, Starwood found himself high above the world and sitting upon the thinnest branches available of a tree.

It was late at night. The flowers were in blossom all around, and he was surrounded by the twin mysteries of the universes above and below. Still, his gaze remained distant as he contemplated that strange dragon's words.

______ "You're so limited by sitting here and watching everyone come and go.
"Have you ever seen the Scarred Wasteland and wondered how it ended up that way?
"Ever looked to the Southern Icefield and wanted to see what artifacts have yet to be discovered still?
"Sure, you could ask for tales to find out. But, you know. Doesn't that make you want to see it even more?"

Does it make him want to see all of it more? He doesn't know. He doesn't know what to think or what to feel... is that strange? Starwood considered asking the others, but their replies are all the same. Why leave? We're needed here.

But are they all needed?

Sitting on that tree still, lost between the endless skies above and below, he wonders. Is he stunted because he has never left home? To not know how to feel about his place in the world... surely he has room to grow? Can a Guardian be so immature compared to the visitors and still be useful?

No, he decides. If his purpose in existing is to protect the Starwood Strand, then he must be the best dragon he can be. Perhaps that strange dragon is right about him being limited--too limited.

So, he goes. Without so much as a farewell to the other Guardians, none of whom would notice his absence, Starwood makes his way to find that strange dragon's lair near the Observatory. It is time he grew mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. For the Starwood Strand.
