Biography

Coppertooth
-The Moonstruck Craftsman-
Deep within the recesses of a convoluted labyrinth, a spiral dragon fluttered around restlessly, his goggle-clad eyes scanning the table before him. An array of tubes, ores, and artifacts were scattered on the wooden surface, and Coppertooth glanced at each of them impatiently, as if one would jump out at him and explain what exactly he needed to do next. A small, serpentine creature crawled around his legs and tail in an excitable loop, chittering and hissing, small spheres of matters following it dutifully. The Spiral stroked its head thoughtfully, and the Psywurm trilled as it leaned into his touch. "...Perhaps I need to just work on instinct, Orion. Shall we begin?" Coppertooth giggled as he set to work, shaping, mashing, dissolving, assembling, anything he could think of to combine his gathered trinkets. He had a good feeling about this. Things were going to happen, and he would be there to witness the birth of a new craft!

It had begun many years ago, when he was barely out of the shell. He had hatched on the Focal Point, renowned for its otherworldly activity. Much of what was heard were simply rumors, tales told to frighten the hatchlings into being good. However, all tales have a basis of truth to them, and Coppertooth witnessed it firsthand. He'd been practicing flying, bounding from one floating stone to the next, his six wings moving in tandem to keep him aloft. It had only taken an instant: one moment, he had leaped for a spinning piece of crystal, the next...he was in the midst of a crater, surrounded by debris and a very curious vehicle. The inquisitive spiral approached it, marveling at its fluid curves and the strange alloy that it was composed of. He had seen nothing like it, and though there was much he hadn't seen, something about the ship sparked a desire in him. He wanted to do more than simply know of it. He wanted to create it. However, before he could examine it further, the ship propelled itself up and blasted away, a mysterious magic that also pushed the young hatchling far from the crater. He'd been obsessed ever since, working tirelessly to try and replicate the ship through a volatile combination of magic and ancient technology. Some may call it madness, but he preferred progress: were the greatest inventors not ridiculed, too, before they changed the world?

It was finished. Coppertooth looked upon his creation with pride: a metal ship, shaped like a circular seed. Though it wasn't quite the same as the one he had seen, there was something about this one that called to him. At a word, Orion skittered under the table as his master set the final stage of his life's work in motion. Coppertooth closed his eyes, feeling the pull and ebb of magical energy surrounding him. It was easy enough to call it forth, and far easier to channel it into the strange craft he had shaped. A thin stream of pure magenta energy flowed and surrounded the metal hull, crackling and sparking along its edges, but for a time...nothing happened. With a growl, the Spiral called forth more energy, and the trickle widened, deepened, until the crackles and shorts were nearly deafening, the ship filling with arcane energy to its very core. Then, something astonishing happened. The seed ship, fueled by such a massive influx of energy...began to float, hovering barely an inch off of the old wood. Coppertooth opened his eyes, marveling at his creation. At long last, his life's work!

...But something went wrong. Unchecked, the flow of energy grew and expanded, and the ship was soon enveloped in magenta light. Even with the goggles' protection, the young dragon's eyes burned, and he turned away with a hiss. The metal seed juddered and shook, arcane energy tearing it apart from within. Then, with a final shudder...it went still. For the barest of seconds, nothing moved. And then...the metal exploded. Golden alloy spattered outward, coating the craftsman and his workshop in burning metal from head to toe. He screeched and collapsed, the world fading into darkness as the arcane energies dissipated.

It was impossible to tell how long he was out, but when Coppertooth finally stirred, he found it fairly easy to stand and move about. The dragon pushed his goggles up to assess the damage, staring in horror at what his failure had done to him. His body was laced in coppery gold, coating his horns, his wings and scales. He was lucky to have not been blinded, and luckier still to have survived in the first place. But adhered as it was with energy he'd called forth, the layer of gold was permanent. And though it hadn't harmed him, his wings were ruined by the metal. He would be lucky to manage a short flight, and a long one was out of the question. The spiral bowed his head, bitter shame filling his heart. Such was the price of madness.
