Biography

Along with Xendum, Xana is a minder for the hatchlings and other dragons who pass through the clan's territories before moving on to serve the Arcanist. She's a bit nearsighted, but behind those prescription goggles she has a sharp eye for her charges. She's good at telling stories to keep the little ones occupied and out of trouble, and she loves teaching the older acolytes how to operate various bits of scientific and magical equipment that they'll use in their research for the Arcanist once they leave.

It was meant to be a normal Saturday afternoon. The hatchlings were supposed to be listening to one of Xendum's daily stories while Xana prepared their beds for nap time. Oh, how they both wished it was a normal Saturday afternoon, but it was far from that.

Normally, Xana and Xendum found it quite easy to round up the hatchlings without too much of a fuss, but the clan had recently welcomed a new arrival and the hatchlings were elated. Look to your left - there are 2 hatchlings screaming with joy. Look to your right - there are 6 hatchlings swarming the new dragon. Look anywhere you could possibly think of and there's a hatchling. Watch out, one's just run past you! As much as they loved the hatchlings and all of their energy, sometimes they really wished they could just hurry and grow up already.

Chaotic is how any derg over the age of 5 days would describe the scene. And not to mention the newcomer was absolutely terrified - it's not every day you have 6 excited little children shouting and screaming at you all at once, is it? Well, it will always be annoying, but Xana and Xendum just had to learn to deal with it.

"Ugh, these children are behaving awfully today. It's so loud I can't hear myself think! I refuse to believe I ever behaved like this when I was younger." Not only could Xana barely hear herself think, Xendum could barely hear anything at all, yet he just about managed to hear the most important bits and pieces of her complaint over all of the screaming.

"I know, but I'm sure they'll calm down eventually. Why don't you go somewhere quiet and compose yourself while I figure out how to calm the hatchlings? I'll send someone to go fetch you some tea" Xendum kindly suggested. With almost no hesitation Xana agreed and left to go elsewhere, silently praying for Xendum and the newcomer.

Being a librarian by occupation, it was obvious that she headed straight to the clan's library - one of the best places to collect yourself in her opinion. She creaked open the door, seeing one or two other dergs in there reading quietly, and gently walked in. On the way to her favourite seat, she grabbed a book and greeted the other dragons that she passed. Letting out a soft sigh, she slumped in the chair and thought back what on earth she had experienced a minute ago. Taking care of the hatchlings was a big responsibility, and it really exhausted her sometimes, but she had a kind soul and took great pride in looking after them before they were sent off to serve the Arcanist.

It was only a short while until a dragon came up to her with some tea, breaking her from her thoughts. She silently thanked them and took the cup, gently placing it up to her mouth and drinking while reading her book.

After a few hours, Xana decided to go back and check up on Xendum and the hatchlings. Upon entry to the building all was silent - a nice change from earlier. She spotted the hatchlings all in the beds, presumably sleeping; looks like Xendum managed to calm them down after all. Xana smiled to herself and looked to the front of the room to see him talking softly to the newcomer. She walked up to them and greeted them, thanking Xendum for taking control of the situation in her absence. As if it were a normal Saturday afternoon from the beginning, everything was calm, Xendum hadn't lost his mind, the hatchlings were fast asleep, and they managed to successfully calm down and formally welcome the newcomer to the clan. Finally, some peace and quiet.

Well, at least until the hatchlings wake up again..
