It is the unfortunate truth of life that those who are different only have two ways to go - adored or reviled. One cannot be unique and be untouched by the views of others.

Poor Tiamat was born beautiful, and cursed. The sheen of her pearlescent patches, the rainbow brightness of the fins and scales, the beautifully curved horns below her antlers. All of these things contributed to an amazing loveliness... and inspired hatred and fear as well as love and obsession.

Hounded by either those who wanted to keep her like some sort of trophy, or wanted to sacrifice her like some gift of the gods to keep evil away, Tiamat fled from other dragons. In her travels, she learned that her oddness came with another benefit... she could breathe underwater. Using that to her advantage, she traveled often by sea and learned how to fight in conditions that would hinder others.

One day, while resting on a rock in the middle of a sheltered cove, Tiamat observed several strange and unusual dragons coming and going from the caves. Intrigued, the imperial stayed there several days and was amazed at the sheer variety of dragons - beautiful, strange, frightening, funny, unusual - that called the lair home. And all of them living in loving, if sometimes teasing, harmony.

Tiamat finally could stand it no longer, and pushed past her fear of others to introduce herself. There were no gasps of awe or horror. There were no vitriolic reactions of any kind... unless you could count unbridled joy at a new friend. It was only a matter of hours before Tiamat knew she had found friends and a home. Her skills in the water are appreciated, but she herself is just another dragon to love.
