I guess I'll talk about the KING/QUEEN pairs as well, since you've just shared about yours! So they're somewhat related to the DRONE subspecies, in that they're each the progenitors of a hive, with different ranks of drone being the different chess pieces-- PAWNs are the smallest drones that do basic processes, like gathering food/feeding the brood/hive maintenance and all; KNIGHTs are a warrior caste used mainly in attacking external threats; ROOKs are a more defensive caste built to take heavy damage without failing, and often work in conjunction with KNIGHTs to defend the nest if any issues should crop up; and BISHOPs are information storage.
The entire nest would likely be considered defective if they were to interact with other members of the DRONE subspecies, of course, because they're a large part of one of my pinkerlockes, where they interact reasonably well with the actual dragons of the challenge (in large part because I uh. Don't read the actual lore very carefully and just said to heck with it, they're allies, hahaha.) They don't, or maybe can't, convert actual dragons into more DRONEs, and in any case the dragons being allies benefits them because they can rely on the dragons defending the same place they've selected as home.
Where they actually came from is anybody's guess, but they've taken up residence in the burial site and don't show any signs of moving out.
