bast
origin. egyptian mythology. "fire, heat, ointment jar."

────── ❂ ──────

The land stretching between the Emberglow Heart and the Highland Scrub is a harsh, dry place. Sun and sand parch the arid stretch of territory, and survival is a privilege allowed only to the fittest of creatures. Even powerful dragons struggle to survive in such an environment, so at the mercy of the elements.

Bast has survived, though. It has taken every ounce of her willpower, but she has survived through and through. She was born to those vicious lands, the dry desert sand swirling in her belly, making her one with the earth below, and those who dared to steal from her hoard learned soon enough that she was not to be trifled with. Her possessions were few, but charmed with powerful persuasive magic that delivered their captors back to Bast’s waiting claws for justice. She did not then understand the extent of her magic, only that it allowed her to live alone without true fear of bandits.

It was this magic that drew Twine to her. While the soothsayer was collecting bones, she stumbled across Bast’s little desert lair, and sensed the enormous magical strength within. After convincing Bast that she was not a thief, she was able to persuade her to come to Amsterwick and channel her abilities into work there.

Now, Bast labors away as an enchantress of weapons, gracing steel with her extraordinary persuasive skills, and blessing other items of a less deadly nature for a fee. She has also begun what appears to be a lasting affair with Janus, another dragon with sand in his stomach and the stars in his eyes; they can often be found together, and she is one of the few dragons able to draw Janus out of his palace rooms, away from his riddles and broken clocks.
