The word charm comes from the french Charme and the earlier Latin carmen meaning chant or song and that is exactly what the word meant originally. Primitive man ascribed all his misfortunes to the hostility of numerous evil spirits which, though normally invisible, could assume any human or animal form they chose in order to disguise their true identity. (Later these entities became personified and individualised according to the nature of their particular spheres of melific influence).
Such malevolent spirits were believed to have the power to cause accident, illness or death as well as to destroy crops and property, either by direct action or by melific influence of the 'evil eye' which could be cast upon any living person or animal. Sometimes these demonic beings worked through a human agency and such a person would also be credited with the power to cast the evil eye at a glance, a belief that still persists in many rural areas throughout the world today.
Happily though there would also be a local wise woman/man (witch/shaman/medicine woman/man, etc) who was able to commune with these evil spirits on behalf of the stricken person and would therefore be called upon to utter the right words, pronounce a spell, formula or invocation, over the person or property under attack or threat in order to avert the evil eye or malignant forces.
These charms afforded the person who knew them status within the community and were handed down orally from generation to generation in order that such valuable assets should not be lost. A tradition which continued for centuries until written language developed.

With the advent of the written word it became possible to imbue charms with some sort of permanency because the magical formula/sacred verse could be inscribed on or in a wide variety of materials depending on the use of the charm and the status of the recipients.
Many personal charms were inscribed directly onto pieces of jewellery that could be worn about the person or written on a piece of writing material which could be carried by it's user. Charms could also be inscribed directly into the structure of a building or be hung on the walls. Thus changing the chaacter of charms from the spoken word to an object which embodied the magical formula or sacred text designed to give it's owner continual protection and to attract benevolent forces.
